Help with stygian coal lich

i started this build because it claims to have “insane single target” but i dont see it. the damage feels awful. i must be doing something wrong so i thought i would ask for someone more experienced than me to have a look.
i am following this guide https://www.lastepochtools.com/build-guides/welcome-to-the-naughty-list---crit-stygian-coal-lich

it says for end game i should have :

  • 150 Intelligence
  • 50% spell crit
  • 300% crit multiplier
  • 150% total cast speed (+50% from gear)
  • 60% Endurance

i have 148 int., 300 crit multi 48 spell crit. why does the damage feel so low? i just started doing empowered monoliths and can barely do them. i cant imagine doing any high content with this build but others can kill uber abberoth with this. what am i missing?

i know my gear needs upgrades but even with this gear i should have better damage

edit, how does death seal work exactly? when i press it, it barely does anything but the guide says that its the “big damage skill” nothing seems to happen when i use it except i die quite often.

You’re missing health, you have 1200 and your death seal gives lots of damage, particularly through the 165% increased damage from Corrupted Consciousness and the necrotic shred from first generating ward through the heart relic and then popping Death Seal.

For more damage, hold down rip blood and click Drain Life every half second or so; it doesn’t look much different on the screen but you’re stacking active Drain Life’s that last 5 seconds apiece.

thanks for looking. so i’m not missing anything obvious other than health ? i wonder why the build feels so meh. by lvl 85 all my other builds performed much better. and just so i’m clear do i press death seal once or press it and leave it on for a couple of seconds and press again? i tried both ways and never see any big damage

edit- the OP in that guide has 1900 life…surely the extra 700 life he has cant make that much difference?

yea I noticed the same thing, I was so low on health and focused on ward but then switched to more health and better gear with life and endurance and the damage just jumped completely. Here’s my build at around level 96 at 400’ish corruption. It hits like a truck but can get swarmed a bit if you don’t manage the cooldown of the death seal skill since you do more damage at low health and the death seal skill node on the left has a spot where it brings you to 33% health cap.

BTW Mantle of the Pale Ox chest piece is an amazing item. Make sure to grab 4 large idols with health % and ward to stack as much as possible.

The health makes a big difference to the damage reduction you’re receiving while using Death Seal, from Endurance.

Death seal is the button you press any time it’s off cooldown and you want to kill things way, WAY faster than you already are, and ideally you’ll only use it while in Wraith form; you have to develop a feel for when you’d rather have the extra health and when you’d rather multiply (by at least 3x and it goes higher) your damage.

thanks but i already changed the build to a torment warlock which isnt much better honestly. all these builds are too squishy, low damage and need keyboard piano with the different skills. i hope acolyte gets some good changes and QOL. right now i dont like any of the builds i tried. other classes feel so much better

i’m sure the problem is me but i was following a guide each time and if i couldnt make it work then these builds are not new player friendly at the very least

on my judgement paladin i was doing 800 corruption before i got bored. very simple play style and good damage super tanky.

Yeah the coal Lich takes a lot engagement unless you’re just clearing mono’s/bosses that can’t threaten you for sure, understandable brudda. Acolyte rework incoming!

yeah acolyte just feels too tedious to play. havent played necro since the last patch, do we still need to constantly press dread/infernal shade? that was driving me nuts. and minion AI was pretty bad too. sometimes they would not attack unless i press A to direct them. minions should be a lazy play style not all this busy work

for lich/warlock it feels like death seal and profane veil are pretty mandatory like the shades for necro, you need to keep juggling them on top of all the other skills. just too much busy work

some quality of life changes would be nice for acolyte

No, they changed Dread Shade to be unlimited duration recently. Infernal Shade still has a duration because its a dps spell primarily.

Infernal shade does have a node to make it unlimited duration as well, though.
So as long as your minions can survive the damage from both shades, they can both stay on indefinitely.

Yeah, but that’s always been there, the post I was replying to was mentioning the need to recast dread/infernal shade which implies they weren’t using that particular node in infernal shade.

If you follow a guide make sure to actually understand it. There is more to a functioning character than just copying items. It’s as if someone would copy a Mageblood build in PoE without the Mageblood and then complain why said build doesn’t perform as advertised.

More often than not you can get by but just aiming for raw or similar stats, because the guide told you so, isn’t a good approach. Read the uniques, every skill node, passives and abilities to get the best out of your build guide.
