GPU utilization outside of gameplay

I have a pretty bad gpu so this is really obvious to me, but the game uses WAY too much GPU where it shouldn’t. This is any kind of menus and loading screens, where I’m looking at mostly 2d stuff and not my controllable character.

For example while in que to play online I can hear my gpu fan going hot and see in task manager that the “3D” part of gpu stats is at 99-100%. Not only is this bad for the hardware, it’s bad for my electricity bill and the environment. There definitely should be some kind of caps on gpu utilization in these low visual scenes.

Yup, just loading LE immediately pegs my GPU (RTX 3070) to 100% and continues through character selection (online or offline), and the “Connecting” modal as well. There’s clearly something wrong.

I have a GTX 1650 on a gaming laptop that is normally like borderline unusable on most games nowadays and it’s only using 60% on this game. In and out. Idk. I would make a bug report and put your PC details with it.

Games seems surprisingly optimized so my assumption would be it’s an isolated issue. And I don’t say that a bout a lot of games. 99% of games have absolutely zero optimization

Does it help if you limit background FPS?

No it’s at 15fps and that should not strain my gpu even in gameplay

I would agree with those saying game is optimized, was getting 50fps on ultra with a 1060 3gb 8th gen i7 16gb 7200rpm drive. Playing solo online, only got the could not connect on the 3rd day.

What version of Windows are you using?
System specs? Do any Windows optimization? Not talking about buggy programs.
Sometimes Windows is inefficient with the bloat built in. That it can eat up more resources causing other components to work harder.

PoE is a heavy hardware hitter. Even the latest CPU and GPUs can struggle to keep up.
I ran through optimization, then cleaned up GPU stuff and things ran a lot smoother on a junk build.

Might be able to suggest a couple things to help out. Would take 5-15 minutes of easy fixes. Helps overall.

Might not be the same itself but just how your system is handling it.

For me, my fans barely kick on. The room gets warm, but my GPU stays at 0 RPM mode most of the time.

The game run fine in early acces for me , had 0 issue during that time. With 1.0 my gpu stays mostly at 100% temperature goes over 70celsius. So calling it well optimized is a bit funny. I think it all comes down to their engine selection , unity in general aint that good for rpgs.

If I crank up the graphics my GPU runs at 100% as well. On Medium settings my GPU has so little to do it won’t get hot enough for the fans to start up spinning. To me it looks like some higher settings are real hogs when it comes to utilization of the GPU.

I’m not having issues with general performance. The gameplay is optimized well in my opinion. My issue is entirely with my gpu being strained when I’m staring at a loading screen etc. when it should be barely utilized.

My windows etc. is pretty optimized already as I’ve run a junk setup for a long time & have IT background. I don’t have similar issues in hundreds of games.

My system is just turning 4 years. AMD 3600 (non-X), 64GB ram (was cheaper than 32 and D4 high quality textures needs 32gb min they say), and a 3090 w/ 3 240hz 1440p monitors (game on 1, movie/tv show on another, and some guides/forums/discord on third).

POE does hammer but since replacing the older 980GTX I was rocking well into mid 2021 with the 3090, I have not noticed anything that would be concerning in temps/cpu usage. In LE, betas were fine, and with 1.0 still seems fine. Rarely do the 3090 jump above 68-70 degrees on load on air cooling (stock) and no fan curve optimizing. This is in a warmish unfinished basement (approx 22-24 degrees Celsius). I do hear the fans when I play but not much enough to know they are on but far quieter than any laptop GPU noise that I have heard. I think if I crank my case fans, they are louder. I’ll pay extra attention tonight, but I do not think I have seem the load getting up to 100% either.

I do admit that the game once it is launched in Steam seems to take over 30secs to actually start and get to the login screen since 1.0 versus beta which IRCC was much quicker.

I do clean out the case and fans at least a few times in the year to get rid of dust or such from inside. I will probably look at doing some thermal paste/pad re-application soon. Also, I have not updated drives in over a month. I review the notes for the drives and decide if I think it will solve an issue I am having or affect anything I do. If it doesnt, then I do not update. I also used the nvcleanstall tool/system to do my installs and updates. I only install the graphics driver, no other nvidia items.

EDIT yep GPU spikes for sure. not quite 100, but 98% and eventually to 90%

What optimizations are you speaking of? I have a 3080 and an otherwise great rig, but I get the same issue on the loading screens of LE. I have to turn the graphics settings & frame rate down to 90fps to get my GPU down to about 60%.

I’d love to play at 144hz. What tips you got?
