Frost claw at melee range (and the melee-ish nodes) not hitting targets?

I just started a spellblade. The Shiver Shell (chance to cast Frost Claw when hit) and Macuahuitl (chance to cast Frost Claw on melee hits) nodes seemed cool but… It seems the casts just go behind my target and never hit them?

Am I missing something here?
