Feedback: Ambiguous leech terminology

I’m trying to build a Hammer Throw Void Knight and I’m running into some issues with regaining health once damaged. I’m having a hard time figuring out what itemization I need to go for so that leech will work with the skill, and how much leech I need.

I have a variety of gear available for him and have tested a few things. Here are my findings:

Hybrid Leech & Leeching idol affixes
The Hybrid Leech item affix and Leeching idol affix say “% of damage leeched as health on hit” and the detailed info says:
“A percentage of the damage dealt by your hits is returned to you as health over three seconds. This does not apply to damage over time.”

However, when I equip an item or idol with this stat and no other sources of leech, my character sheet shows no changes to leech stats under defense. If I equip an item/idol or allocate a passive with specifically melee leech, the increased health leech definitely shows up. That being said, it definitely works. If I wander into a low level monolith and get hit, then throw hammers, my health goes up faster than my normal regeneration.

Side note: the game guide says that leech works with damage over time, which just adds to the confusion here.

Comparison with Bleeding Heart
The affix for Bleeding Heart says “% of damage leeched as health” and the detailed info says:
A percentage of your damage is returned to you as health over 3 seconds.

When I equip this item, 3 stats go up:
Damage leeched as health
Melee damage leeched as health
Spell damage leeched as health

My understanding is that melee and ranged/thrown all count as hits. If you search for “hit” in the Hammer Throw skill tree it definitely counts as a hit. Further, in my testing the leech does work for the skill. However, there isn’t a category for ranged or thrown damage leeched as health, like there is for melee. So this is pretty confusing, and would definitely throw new players for a loop.

I also think a more advanced detail tab (possibly in the character panel) for each skill would be a warm welcome so we know what the damage is, if stats are applying correctly, etc.

We dont take about bleeding hearth !
(They will nerf it - it is freaking overpowered…)

Bleeding is GLOBAL, Unconditional leech - it WORKS on Damage over Time and on Hits.
Its like the only way to get Damage over time to leech that is easy to get for everyone.

The Affixes and 99% of the other leech stuff in the game are “on hit” and do not work on damage over time.

And now SILENCE
There is no bleeding hearth :stuck_out_tongue:

The Char menu is missing tons of entries - it only shows uncondtional leech (meele / ranged / thrown / spells) and single conditonal leech (only meele / only spell) but not double conditional (meele and hit, spell and hit, ranged and hit, … etc.) oder even three conditional (fire skill hit damage leeched as health or anything like that)

why would they nerf it, one of the only ways to leech from DoTs, costs an amulet slot and HP regen and inflicts bleed on you per spell which is fkn annoying when leveling and trying to stay on full HP such as Rogue buffs with it is tedious

Leech is extremely straightforward in this game -

‘Damage leeched as health ON HIT’ will apply to all ON HIT unless its specified ‘Melee leech’

‘Damage leeched as health’ without the ON HIT means ALL damage leeches including damage over time - simply only Bleeding Heart and Lich passives has this

Additionally, if he put some points into the Void Knight World Eater passive then he could leech of the void aura you can spec hammers into.

That said, this is a character sheet issue, rather than a leech issue & @EHG_Mike said they were going to rework that entire screen.

Ive noticed you mentioned PoE so you seem to know about it and hence you might know about their Leech mechanics which is the most convoluted system in any aRPG ever. in comparison LE’s leech system is much simpler and effective

LE’s is simpler, but if there were a line on the character sheet for “leech on hit” then the OP probably wouldn’t have been confused. The character sheet as it currently stands is confusing & misleading until you get that it doesn’t actually tell you everything, or even that much (& it double counts global damage modifiers something chronic).

Guess you can not save the char sheet in a game where that many things are on a condition in terms of damage (thats a good thing!)

They need a “Skill Slot Sheet” and get rid of the entire damage part of the char screen. Only pure global defenses are MAYBE fine on char sheet - but even here there are conditional things depending on what skill is used - like well sorry PoE

Yeah, everything is skill-based, so having a stats sheet that doesn’t do anything by skill is not ideal (which is likely why they’re re-doing the entire page). The only things in the the game you can interact with without using a skill are gear, vendors/quest givers & walking about (& maybe using a health potion).

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it. You’re right, it’s a character sheet issue and I’m looking forward to the sheet changes. Would be nice to know what all damage types a skill is inflicting as well.

Yeah it took a lot of trial and error to figure out what was hidden and what setup would work best for me for now. Actually went a different route - I’m using Keen idols to trigger smite. I like stuns as cc as well, so my hammer tree doesn’t really have room for the void aura. First char is a Warpath FG. Found a bunch of items while leveling that made me interested in VK, so I leveled that as Warpath as well, until I kept getting Exalted throwing damage drops. It’s been fun theory-crafting in this game.

Speaking of World Eater, due to the prevalence of thrown skills Sentinel has, I’m bummed that World Eater isn’t Physical leech instead of just melee. There’s some other things that feel missing as well, such as any passives for polearms. Every other weapon type that Sentinel uses for melee has passives, but not polearms. Some of the trees have block specifically for shields, some are block with anything. I’d obviously prefer universal blocking.
