Entangling Roots Boss Interaction - Question

I have a quick question I wasn’t able to find in a search.

The dot portion of Entangling Roots says “Rooted enemies take physical damage over time until freed”**

Does this actually have any impact on the dot portion of the damage say, for bosses? Do they not get rooted and not take the dot portion, do they get rooted for a reduced duration and take a reduced duration of damage? Or does it do the full damage and just not root them?

I don’t have a character with entangling roots right now, but should be fairly simple to test. Find a boss and cast entangling roots only and see how long or if the damage ticks.
