Editing save file against TOS?

Since the devs made the chars save locally on your comp and it’s a single player game, how is editing the save file against TOS?

Because its against the ToS. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should.

Why is it against the ToS? Probably because they want players to experience an “authentic” experience as well as not have the possibility that you editing your save file created a bug that otherwise wouldn’t be possible and they then need to spend time tracking it down.

This. If you edit your save files, you are undermining the Beta as a test environment and taint whatever feedback would otherwise normally be genuine. For example, your view of affix shards and loot can easily become skewed if you just put in 9999 Rune of Shattering every time you run out so you can break down everything you find.

Agreed with the comments above.
And adding it’s a single player game but it has a ladder, so any mod you make to your char will alter the authenticity of the ladder.

I would be highly suprised if they would ever do anything against something like this as long as its single player only. I also took a quick look at the game files and it looks like modding might not be too difficult in the future and would add a huge amount of value to the game (like median did to D2).

But as always with this topic, never risk what your not willing to lose.

I think it’s reasonable that they may append this portion of the ToS after MP releases since they have stated that they would be emphasizing MP ladder much more and are aware of these kinds of possible manipulations on SP.

My view is that, when multiplayer is released, I would like modding being permitted to offline characters but I would like to totally exclude them from any kind of ladder, hall of fame, etc, and I would like to make tweaked chars strictly solo with no way to remove the “solo” challenge. This would maybe help lesser the number and impact of tweaked chars, hopefully.

Id rather they completly separate anything competitve into online play and allow local coop (or open servers) with mods or similar. Leaves open much more options and saves alot of dev time trying to do anti-cheat against modders.

Eh, I agree I’d like modding to be part of SP and to exclude ladder from it. I would like the ability to connect directly with other modded players (but not part of the Official MP w/ Ladder).

As for the “solo” tag, I think it’s okay for it to be removable, but if someone is going to edit their character to suddenly add that tag, I don’t see a good reason or way for devs to waste time on that. It’s just bragging rights–if that–and anyone who knows it’s a SP character will know it’s potentially susceptible to such editing. If it’s going to cause drama and issues, I’d rather EHG just got rid of the Solo thing entirely than waste a bunch of time/resources to deal with it–at least for SP.

That wasn’t the question though. Is editing/modding allowed now? No. Might it be allowed in the future (ie, after the multiplayer/offline thing is properly in & working)? Hopefully.
