Dying to an Exiled Mage in Monolith Echoes

I believe this was mentioned some time back when Exiled Mages were first introduced and I want to mention it again. It sucks to die to a secondary or added enemy in a Monolith Echo before you have completed the echo and you lose everything just doesn’t feel right.
I know you can go around these add-on enemies and come back to them later but it just seems not right.

And what would you want to see changed?

Dying from such a optional enemy should not cause any penalty?
Make them weaker so dying to them becomes less common?

LE already has very few risk vs. reward situations and making some of these even less meaningful would not help the game in my opinion.
I would advocate for even more things getting added that pose a actual risk, but come with some good rewards if you can deal with them.

Exiled Mages and Nemesis are dangerous, but they don’t really impose any serious risks, other than loosing the regular echo reward.
