It always spawns you back in the first timeline no matter which timeline you died in. I did a few echoes before I started to wonder why it was so easy, then I noticed I was back in 55 again.
This will be fixed in 0.7.9e. Sorry about that! In the meantime, you can return to the Timeline you intended to be doing by going to its waypoint on the Map.
