Difficulty and DoTs

Not much to say here aside from add in a meaningful way to spec into DoT defense or figure out a way to reach the same “level” of difficulty you think is correct, without using DoT’s. No I see you reaching for the auto kill button, no bad developer you can do better.

It may be too late for big improvements here. Where else can the challenge come from? There are limited sources of difficulty in the game and at this point it would be incredibly hard to retrofit new ones. Anything like challenging resource management, more tactical positioning & skill use, or smarter mobs would require a major design rethink & heavy reworking of swathes of content or even substantial new tech. On the other hand, with “you die” mechanics, making the Hardest Boss Yet is a (relatively) trivial process of desigining some hard but “fair” patterns without needing to touch any existing features or content.

It would definitely be really nice to see more diverse forms of difficulty (and with it, more possibility to itemise to neutralise specific challenges you don’t enjoy), but I think realistically speaking LE is pretty settled at the current model of difficulty. Hopefully there can be some incremental improvements over time.

Likely true. It is still in my view poor game design to play a game of poker and have your opponent slam their cards down and cry out Bridge! Just like its poor design to have the vast majority of your difficulty hinge on a damage mechanic that you purposefully deny the ability to spec against.

There’s an amulet base that gives less DoT damage taken, the only defensive mechanics that can’t protect and block, armour and glancing blow. Dodge provides some indirect protection by you not getting hit therefore you can’t have DoT stacks applied. Resists will protect you against their respective DoT, ward, endurance and generic damage reduction will all protect against DoTs. Some masteries have protection against DoTs for thematic reasons. There’s even a belt affix that will completely negate/clear any DoT damage you take when you use a potion and you only need a tier 1 affix!!

Unless I’ve misunderstood the problem/complaint?

Yep, mostly in the meaningful aspect. There are things that can help and cleanse DoT’s but they are too narrow in availability and quantity to matter.

Fair enough, thanks for clearing it up, though I disagree.
