Different coloured damage numbers for Ailments/DoTs

I’ve been playing a ton of builds lately, many of which incorporate some type of Damage over Time effect or the other. Bleed, Poison, Ignite, Spirit Plague etc and found myself thinking that if the DoTs were possible to be shown like say Red for Bleed, Orange for Ignite, Green for Poison etc, it would be really cool. Would make gauging your damage and the duration of your DoTs at a glance, help you figure out easily if you need to reapply some DoTs etc.

Actually a really cool idea.
I can only see some “problems” coming up with this. What if you focus on straight hit dmg without ailments. Let’s say you focus on elemental dmg, you have to seperate all 3 elementals with different colors, blue cold, red fire, navy blue lightning. Then you might have small chances to procc frostbite and ignite ailments so you have to add 2 more seperated dmg numbers and colors representing those ailments. With a high attack speed build, seeing 5 different colored numbers in a very short amount of time can be overwhelming and too colorful on the screen. Don’t get me wrong i really like the idea, im just trying to figure out how something like this can be implemented without being overwhelmed by too many numbers on the screen. Maybe enable only the dmg numbers for certain elementals in the option menu that you wanna see on the screen while hiding the other ones, similar to the lootfilter?

I have asked in another thread specifically to see health leech on hit / regen on a character too… right now its impossible to see this without deducing it from your HP pool…

To make it simple (addressing the possibility of a rainbow of numbers)… Yes, a loot filter type approach would be nice, but it doesnt need to be configurable… i.e. just let us toggle on/off what we want to see… that way for testing we can just switch on DoT bleed to see what it does… maybe not activate all colours at once… so all damage stays in white or yellow (crit) and then we just toggle the damage etc that we are concentrating on…

Alternatively… just give us an option to log-to-chat/txtfile of the last 10 seconds of damage - probably would solve the need just as well…

Good point!

Just make it like in Grim Dawn - use one colour to mark 3 elemental permanent damages. This also could be done for elemental DOTs if we all 3.
