Devs - Game breaking bug Emperor of Corpses

What went wrong?
I spawned in, engaged the boss, and got killed instantly, despite having max resist all, approximately 1600 hp, 500+ hp/s regen, crit avoidance, etc.

The boss showed no telegraph, and I was just instantly dead on my HC lvl 77 Primalist named Bronmir.

I have tolerated the death of a few of my level 80+ Primalists and not bothered with any reports, because I figured it is a BETA, and I could use this as a learning experience. Despite several of them dying due to game breaking bugs, I have now had my fill of it, so I hope that you might address the issue, and reactivate HC status on my online HC character, as this was caused by something completely out of my control.

Please inform me of the next steps.

Welcome to the forum. I am not an EHG dev, but have been around here for a while so thought I would offer some comment/advice.

None of these stats will help you survive the Emperor of Corpses big AoE which the deathscreen seems to indicate you died to. Its intended to not get hit by this and beyond some very niche counters where well timed immunities can save you, it kills most if not all players - especially if you are only lvl 80ish - if it hits.

This would be very odd as its very obvious when he is winding up his attacks and usually gives more than enough time to walk out of the damage area and walk back for the second ring. Even with recent bugs related to this encounter (see below), I dont recall anyone mentioning that his telegraph isnt happening. Was this the first time or does this problem exist every time you attack him irrespective of character?

There are issues specifically with the Emperor of Corpses is moved by the player / minions and when the game gets out of sync client/server and the exact area of the AoE doesnt match the arena so you can potentially die while thinking you are out of danger but are not.

This is an issue the devs are aware of but doesnt match what you describe as no telegraph - normally people having this known problem is that they say they moved away but were still hit, not that they didnt seen a telegraphed attack.

As to restoring your char because of this? I have not heard of the devs doing this for anyone since MP started and realistically I wouldnt expect them to do - its a BETA game, there are known bugs and transient errors that could affect anyone and everyone. Its sort of expected that things like this could and do happen. EHG would need an entire department to handle requests to restore chars or revert characters after a problem. Maybe they would do something like this but thats likely unrealistic.

Dear Vapourfire,

Thank you for the warm welcome, and the kind perspective that you offered. It’s wonderful that you tempered your perspective with supporting information in relation to known issues.

What I can say is that there was no telegraph, however, I did use several abilities on the boss that ‘move him’, like Fury Leap’s specialised pull-mechanism called Gravity, and Warcry’s fully upgraded pull mechanism called Apprehend.

The fact that there was no visible warning of any kind of abilities, but just an instant death the moment I killed the last of the baby corpse adds, that is what got me. I would not have even bothered to write if it had been my own fault, or if it was due to going there way too early, however, all my stats including armor and damage reducing specializations and abilities were extremely superior on this character when compared to the last time I practically AFK killed him on my previous Primalist.

Having said as much, I have very little time to spend on games in comparison to many members of our lovely community, however, I willingly and enjoyably spent this time on the game knowing that I was building towards recovering a newer, more powerful version of my old character. To then have it die in such a meaningless manner just broke my desire to play and so I was hoping that with the provided evidence I could recover my character this one time.

Should this not be the case then the team can inform me of such, it just seemed like it could be worth a shot, as it is not the first time I have lost a character that is approaching the upper echelon to a broken game mechanic, and quite frankly I do not have the time, or the energy/desire to level up all over again. It’s very grind heavy, and I have now lost a considerable amount of gear.

Would have been great to have had a recording of this to try and “see” exactly what may have happened because the telegraph of his AoE is basically screen wide so for it not to be displaying is definitely odd.

e.g. in this vid I found on youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URMvUwiEWtY&t=151s - you can clearly see the ring that forms around him that is the telegraph - there isnt anything else to look out for and it covers the whole screen so its hard to miss.

If thats not there / cannot be seen then something really went odd as thats not related the the current out of sync bug that is happening on online play.

Your Moving him with skills COULD be related - i.e. a variation on the existing bug that affects the display of the telegraph but I havent heard anyone else mention that before. Its not impossible that you found a different issue with the same bug. The devs read these posts so this is something that they can add to the other bug issue.

Be careful of this assumption with LE - the devs have said that they specifically intend that any boss attack that is telegraphed is to be avoided. I dont know how far you are in the game yet but there are definitely boss fights that, especially in the non-campaign (campaign really is too easy) and higher level sections of the game like Monoliths & Dungeons where even the most OP character will get one-shot if they attempt to face tank it.

That is never a good experience but its a beta and there are so many possible ways for this to happen that I personally expect it. Things caused by bugs or broken game mechanics are almost a given - its the consequence of playing a game thats not finished yet. Things caused by some transient issue like a network error while playing online could very well happen. I suppose I am more pragmatic about things like this having been playing games for a very long time and I have learnt not to sweat them as being important enough to bother me when something goes wrong.

Based on reading between the lines of your reply and guessing at your propensity for handling issues like this, my recommendation would be to take a break and forget about LE for a while. Come back when 1.0 is launched and rage enducing issues like this are likely to be less. They will never be 100% gone, thats the nature of gaming, but less.

I have had this. Back when he was one shotting every body because the arena was too small. Sometime going back in straight away and the boss had continued the fight and was doing another attack.

Dear Vapourfire,

Thank you for responding once again.

There is nothing to read between the lines here. When a character’s death is at least partially my fault, I have no issues accepting it at all, and I will take it as a learning experience. I have been an HC player since games in the late 80s and 90s, so the concern about potentially rage-inducing impact is not necessarily warranted in this particular scenario.

It was merely an attempt to see whether devs could inspect the provided evidence, and overturn the unfortunate premature death of my HC character, and remove the death-flag from its file, as this event that was not avoidable due to the lack of any kind of indication that it was coming, nor caused by sheer inability on the player’s part to avoid an intended telegraphed 1-shot mechanic.

It is worth a shot, as I have already sunk almost 200 hours into this game, and given my own personal circumstances that involve being a single dad of three children, working an incredibly busy job with multiple full-time roles at the international school I work for, while also finishing up another university degree, I would like to avoid pouring more of what little spare time I do actually get to spend on playing a game for my relaxation into rebuilding a character that I should by all means not have lost in the first place.

I’m cognizant of how that must look to you, as for all you know I may be some random person who is trying to make up for their own short comings, however, I provided all the evidence I could, and am actually also attempting to indicate that this could be an unintended bug in the game that they are developing.

Didnt they fix that in a recent update tho? Perhaps this is an outlier event to show the original small arena issue isnt totally fixed?

I understand where you are coming from, I just dont have the same expectations/feelings as you do. Nothing inherently wrong here either way, just different approaches. Things like requesting reverts for game characters etc just isnt in my wheelhouse - purely because this is a game and I treat it as such - while I find it entertaining to play, it has no bearing on real life for me and as such i treat it accordingly and dont lose any sleep when something bad happens. Real Life, for me at least, is WAY more stressful and complicated so I leave that all at the door when playing games.

*** Advice incoming - dont read further if you are unreceptive to that kind of thing ***

After 4 decades of playing games with all the real life commitments we all have, if I can offer some advice without coming across out-of-order - if you feel the need to justify the time value of playing games vs real life schedules and commitments, then you need to re-evaluate your view of playing games. Honestly if that is something you do, then I’d recommend you find something else equally as relaxing but more valuable, something you can look back on later in life and smile and not think, “Holy Hell, I’ve spent 10k hours playing games with nothing to show for it, if only I had learnt a skill, played an instrument or spent more time goofing around with my kids.”

Fair. It’s not a big issue. I just lost three high level characters to bugs already, and it just jarred me a little. It was more born out of a desire to help improve the game by indicating there may be unintentional mechanics/side effects than anything.

I do not play games a lot, so it just sucked to lose another one. It’s much more easily digestible for me when it is my own fault. Having said that, perhaps playing BETA games is simply not my thing, though having written as much, these kinds of issues also exist in plenty of fully released games, so perhaps I should simply not play HC. (Though this would keep me from playing with my brother and friends from time to time, as they play HC exclusively.)

Food for thought.
