I know there’s a lot of talk going around about sets not being so good and yeah, it’s true, but I think that presents an opportunity for a Cycle.
Here’s what I suggest:
In one of the cycles, we discover a new NPC called “The Collector” - this collector guy like to collect Legendary and Set gear and if you feed him your unwanted legendary & set items + complete his quest/challenge → he will give you a new Glyph/Rune (based on the items given and challenged completed) that only works on Set items and adds an additional power/bonus.
Imagine this:
The collector asks you to collect a 3 piece set and bring him 1 legendary weapon and 1 legendary armor. After donating the items, he opens a portal to his arena where you will face his “challenge” - defeat the unique Boss / unique bosses.
If you survive the challenge, he gives you the new Glyph/Rune and a set item you can craft upon (could be based on your class or on the set you brought him).
The new Glyph/Rune can either allow you to open a craftable slot on the set item or offer you an additional power to the set item based on that set’s bonus.
You can build a new way of playing a class & create builds that would be different and unique.
Sounds like the makings of a permanent Dungeon where you use Legendaries / Full Sets instead of keys as the entry “fee”. It could even be a random or daily specific legendary or set needed.
Rewards could be varied imho… I dont think messing with Sets like a craftable slot etc would actually be anything to write home about but there are plenty of options for something like this… maybe even something simple like a Rune/Glyph that lets you replace a T5 affix on a maxed out item FP0 with another T5 affix (i.e. giving you a chance to “repair” or “improve” a janky crafted item or make a good T20 a great one)… or even one that lets you guarantee a seal on a T4 affix… .or even allow you to reroll an affix value on a legendary item.
I was thinking of a cycle because I’m not sure if they have enough time to add this prior to 1.0, but it could definitely be a feature added in the first couple of cycles that can shift the meta a bit and also add a new permanent dungeon/feature to the game - like what PoE does with it’s leagues
Idea seems interesting, but I agree with @vapourfire that I probably wouldn’t want it as a cycle mechanic. My reasoning, though, is I think it’s too limited to deep endgame, and I’d rather see cycle mechanics that are interactable from the beginning.
