So I’m running a Primalist Swipe (Converted to Lightning Dmg) build and looking to get some clarity on this to see if I’m understanding “Crit” vs “Melee Crit” correctly.
Basically “Critical Strike” applies to “On Hit” attacks and “Melee Critical Strike” applies to “Melee Attacks”. But Swipe would technically be both a Melee Attack & On-Hit attack? Correct?
If so than it shouldn’t matter which one to stack or get because they should have equal weight in the calculations? Am I thinking about that correctly?
The aspect that confuses me is on the wiki it says “Critical Strike Chance determines the chance of dealing a critical strike with a “Hit” that does not have any skill specific modifiers.”
That last part that I put in Italics gets to me, it makes me think that since Swipe is “Skill Specific” that maybe regular “Critical Strike” doesn’t apply and “Melee Critical Strike” is the correct option.
Thoughts on this? or am I just over-thinking it too much lol
If you want to know if a melee affix affects your skill, check your skill tags. Every skill has tags that say what affects it. If Swipe has a “melee” tag, then melee affixes affect. It’s that simple for every skill.
The “hit” thing is a reminder that damage over time cannot crit because it does not hit, it just does damage. This is also relevant to other things like leech and whether it says on hit or not, because some things work with damage over time and some don’t.
Increased crit chance will affect every skill that isn’t damage over time. That simple.
In general, the game has affixes that are more generically usable, but often comes in lower quantities and then affixes that are more limited in the type of skills they contribute to, but consequently come in higher values on gear.
For example lets say you have a melee fire skill. It’s affected by increased:
Melee Damage
Fire Damage
Elemental Damage
Melee Fire Damage
Intuitively you could see how Fire Damage is more specific than Elemental Damage, or how melee fire damage is more specific than all of them.
So while they all contribute to the same pool of modifiers and are treated the same, you’re probably going to favor the ones more specific to your build because you’ll find better affixes for them.
Interesting, Thank You both for the response, gives me some more to think about, generally I think I have a decent handle on it all except for the “finer” or more “specific” points. I feel like the more specific knowledge I aquire the better equipped I am to handle and understand a wider variety of builds and play-styles.
