I think it would be cool if you could find a nice base, add 10 shards for 2 or 3 affixes and 2 or 3 suffixes, then slam it. You would get some type of randomized result. t0-t5 of each affix with a similar instability as if you found the item like that. Possibly it could also require a rare shard found in only lvl 100 monoliths or something, that would give a chance for a t6 affix/suffix? Just throwing ideas out there.
