I really hope it’s just a bug. Crafting gear directly from character wont put item back after closing crafting window, which causes some accidents sometimes 
Not a bug, although it may be a bit non-intuitive.
You can always reopen the crafting window and put item to your inventory manually. Basically no matter how you open the crafting window: be it from the forge in town or via hotkey, it is always the same “storage”, and will keep the item you put in.
