I think this has been around a while but I couldn’t find anything regarding this. On an account with a lot of crafting shards, putting an item into the forge, or pulling an item out of it, will cause the game to lockup very briefly. I think this issue gets worse as the account gets more shards, so it’s very gradual. It’s not something that seems to get much attention due to being so gradual, not affecting combat, and not really affecting a large portion of players (due to not playing enough to accrue so many shards). Solo characters on the same account with low or no affixes stored do not encounter this issue.

I can confirm that I am seeing a similar “lag” or pause when using the forge that was not there a while ago. I have almost become used to it rather than seeing it as a potential problem.
I have about 65k shards and a few thousand of each of the other forging items.
I have not tested it on solo yet to confirm your observation but it does seem likely.
This is a known issue with how crafting hooked up for the Forge. We will address problems with future optimization updates.
