The last time I played, at some point shattering items stopped working. I had Runes of Shattering, placed a magic/rare item into the forge, pressed the “Shatter” button and nothing happened. No item could be shattered. Only after re-starting the game did it work again.
I tried it for the last time right before logging out, so maybe something in the log file hints at the cause.

Have you tried getting Steam to verify your files?
I haven’t. The problem disappeared after quitting and re-starting the game, so I assume that the problem is gone (for now) and may need some special circumstances to show up again. Hopefully the log file helps identifying those circumstances.
I just validated the files via Steam and everything went fine.
