I think it would be awesome if you could change the sprites of the summons to other things via the cosmetics tab. It could be something as simple as a palette swap, but I think it would be awesome to have a bunch of skeletal dogs. The only thing better than running a horde of the damned is running an aesthetically pleasing horde of the damned. I feel like holiday packs would be pretty popular - little santa hats on all the mages or something
I’m pretty sure something like this will come in time 
We really don’t know anything about their plans for cosmectic stuff.
But i really hope that we get all kinds of cosmetics, including Skill VFX or Summon Appearances like you suggested.
Also i hope we get a appearance overwrite, so we can change base types visually on the character.
