Controller Support Feedback

I only play on controller, this a ton of skills that are completely borked on controller. Arcane ascendance is completely broken, you have no ability to aim. Every traversal skill feels god awful since they made it max distance, I now have to avoid all builds that use traversal skills, shift and teleport still feel fine. There needs to be an auto aim feature like in D4. Just sucks I can only play on controller due to arthritis in my clicking finger, and right now it feels like 90% of the classes and skills are not available to me.

Is anyone from the team looking at the suggestions in this board? The last answer from the game director was from May 2021.

I have some suggestions here.
When you press right or left triggers to go from you inventory to the stash or the vendor, make the cursor remember the last position it was it. That way it would be a lot faster to compare items and require less button pressing.

Remove the button prompt from the chest after it has been opened (the chest after the stage is completed). We have to reposition the char to pick the loot because it defaults to trying to open the chest that is already open.

Just because noone from hte dev team responds doesn’t mean they are not looking into it. They didn’t pin this for no reason.

The mini inbetween cycle patch that is coming on Sep 19th actually will contain Steam Deck Verification, maybe this will include a couple more controller improvements.

Controller improvements always were added from time to time and EHG always said that they will continue improving it.

What have you done? I started up the game after being away for a couple of months and i can’t play it anymore on my steam deck. The utility wheel dont work as i cant switch between quests on the map on controller anymore. Sick of this game regressing instead of improving. Went from working to unplayable on steam deck.

As someone who plays LE / PoE2 with a ps4 controller, my abbreviated thoughts are this:

  • I love that it doesn’t lock me out of kb/m for dealing with inventory/shops, which bugs me to no end in PoE2.

  • Now that i’ve played aforementioned competitor, i’m really used to (and love) the proper twin stick movement. left stick moves your character, right stick makes them face and target in a certain direction.
As it stands whenever I hop back on LE lately, it feels weird to be forced to move in the direction i want to target.

One piece of feedback I have for controllers, some abilities feel really bad because they target the enemy’s current location, so if they’re moving it will completely miss almost every time. On mouse you can lead the attack so that it will hit, but on controller you just have to let it get in your face and hope it doesn’t wreck you. The specific ability I’m having this issue with is Throw Javelin with the Siege Barrage point.

I do not have an Xbox, I have a PS5. The basic support seems to be terrible for a Dual Sense Controller. People made the Community Steam Input Support, and it sometimes works, sometimes the hotkeys for the controller like to not work. Honestly when it works, Controller feels really good with this game. I wish there was IN GAME support more for controller, especially PS5 Controllers rather than having to use a community Steam Input one.

As for navigating things with Controller. Inventory is a bit rough, but mangeable. Honestly I just switch to my Mouse that is also plugged in when it comes to inventory. I know you guys were saying you want to come to console at some points, a word, you will want to make a separate UI etc for console when it comes to Inventory to better navigate with console. PC is fine bc everyone should have a mouse, but something to think about long term.

When opening a skill tree, then I can navigate from node to node with the left thumb stick. When opening the passive points window, it moves the character instead, and I have to use the directional buttons instead. It would be nice if the passive points window worked like the skill trees

I’m playing on and off with controller in the new season, very fun.

My main issue stopping me from committing fully to using it is the large delay between standing next to an item and it’s tooltip appearing in the corner of the screen. Makes me either ignore entirely, or spend 5 times as long looking at an item that I’d just flick over and read while still moving on keyboard + mouse.

Ideally the delay would either be non existent, or just dramatically reduced, as well as removing the delay between tooltips displaying when using the D-Pad to swap between the item I’m looking at.

I’d also prefer if I could still see item tooltip when in combat on controller - I understand why this might not be a thing, but I’d prefer the option to still let items be readable in combat, as I don’t really miss the bottom corner of my screen all that much, compared to having to stand still and constantly break the flow of gameplay.

This is a controller support related Accessibility suggestion:

Chorded binding, instead of only ever single button binds as the game does now.

I am aware the game has controller specific context sensitive change states built into some controller functions now, such as thumbpad up and down doing different things when there are things to look at on the ground nearby such as dropped items, and when there aren’t (they act as scroll in close or far for camera), but I’m talking about:

Allowing the player to designate say, the left and right triggers as state changers for all the other buttons, including all four face buttons, both shoulder buttons and all four directions on the thumbpad.

Just having a single state shift trigger doubles the number of functions all the other buttons give, and state shifting both triggers can add two more functions to each button.

As an example, X button, Ltrigger + x, and Rtrigger+X could all be different functions, and if the devs were really gung ho about it, X+ Both triggers simultaneously could be a forth function.

We all do not have to be married to this whole ultra clunky, single use for each button ever, unless Devs preselect a context sensitive thing, situation.

Please consider chorded binding of the controller.

This could even pave the way for a redesign of the character build system that could utilize more than just five of our many, many unlocked skills.

Controller feedback
Love the game. Love being able to switch between controller and cursor and mouse and keyboard.

That said some of these controller issues are super annoying others small inconveniences.
I don’t like switching between keyboard and controller when doing inventory, so I just wanted to list a few things I’ve noticed.

Some are bugs, I guess, or user error — and others are just oddities and inconsistencies that bug me slightly or insanely much (like the stash opening up in some tab it really seems to love instead of the previous one I used).
Other small inconsistencies make it hard to learn and persist in my brain since every menu is navigated differently.

General Controller Navigation Issues

  • When opening the stash, it doesn’t reopen to the last tab used.
  • Would love a snap-to-item feature when using the d-pad, so I don’t have to scroll over tons of empty spaces when changing categories. (Please copy how PoE2 handles this — left-click the stick to swap between category and stash.)
  • Sorting the inventory is done by holding Y, but sorting the stash requires scrolling to the bottom and clicking a button instead of holding Y.
  • When using RB/LB after selecting another category or tab with the cursor (instead of the d-pad), it starts moving between tabs in the previous category instead of the current one.
  • Navigating skills is done using the left joystick (or the right stick to simulate a mouse), but in the new Weaver Tree, you use the d-pad or move a targeting cursor with the left stick — it’s inconsistent compared to other skill trees.
  • I still don’t fully understand how to consistently navigate between different skill trees and menus. Atleast not consistently.

Inventory / Item Management Problems

  • Trying to move a lens from the inventory into the telescope in the Observatory using X sells the item instead of moving it into an empty slot.
  • Can’t insert an item into the Nemesis Egg using the controller — I have to switch to mouse.
  • Can’t add a Weaver Echo into a socket if the socket is currently targeted by the controller’s crosshair. You have to move the crosshair away and then use the cursor to place it manually. Suggestion: Allow navigating Weaver Echoes in the inventory using the d-pad and placing them with X for consistency like in other areas.
  • The vertical stash menu and global search isn’t accessible using controller. Only the bottom local stash search. (Edit. This isn’t true, i got this to work)
  • Can’t reorder stash tabs using controller.
  • When using LB/RB it doesn’t show the + button after you buy 5 stashes or so. I thought i had maxed out my stash tabs until i found the + button hidden at the end of the list using the right stick cursor.

Gameplay

  • I can’t figure out how to hide/show the loot filter like holding X (on keyboard). is there a way to do this without holding the left menu button + R2 + left stick down and then change to no filter and then enabling it again the same way?

UI/UX Issues

  • After beating a timeline, two windows open over each other: one for XP completion and one for the blessing selection.
  • Item handling is inconsistent across windows where you transfer items from inventory to some other window. In some windows, you can move items using X (quick move), but in others, you have to manually pick up and drag the item instead using right stick or mouse. It’s clunky and inconsistent.

Skill Interaction (Minor / Disregard)

  • (Disregard) Using Dread Shade with Wraithlord is frustrating — trying to make sure I apply Dread Shade to my Wraithlord and not a random Wraith is tricky. It’s basically the difference between damage and no damage, but this is probably just a skill issue on my part.

End Note: I’m not trying to nitpick the game because I genuinely love it.
Just hoping this feedback might help make the controller experience smoother long term!

You resumed almost all the same issues I have with the controller right now, thank you.
I have a few you didn’t list here, maybe it is just me.

Inventory / Item Management Problems

  • I can’t move Idols from my Inventory to the Idol Enchanting, all my idols go to the ground instead of the selection screen.
  • I can’t move Unique items from my Inventory to the Affix Rerolling window.
  • I can’t select 1 affix for the Eternity Cache to used, I have to use the mouse.
  • Switching tabs using LB and RB buttons are still not working in some shops like the lady from Monos.

I’m not sure if it is controller specific , but it does happen when using the native controls on my Legion Go. I am unable to move an item from the stash or my inventory into the nemesis egg slot. The assigned button interacts with my gear and equips the item instead. I have tried manually dragging the item over and it will not go into the nemesis egg slot that way either.

A fix to this would be greatly appreciated as I tend to play on my Legion Go a lot.

While using a controller to hit a monster with swipe with the primal resonance skill point allocated in swipe to proc crowstorm it casts way too far ahead of the enemy you swiped (most of the time on nothing) making the build unplayable with controller. When doing the same exact thing with mouse and keyboard it procs the crowstorm right on top of the enemy you swiped.

Edit: I just want to say, go steal how POE2 does controller support. It is one of the best controller setups for an ARPG I’ve ever played.

This is one of the skills that they should change the target priority on. I was having this issue also.

Please add movement-mode “only evade - follows movement”…

On a controller these other movement modes make sense, but on keyboard WASD, the ONLY movement mode that makes sense is for only evade to follow movement, and all other skills to follow mouse, because:

  1. WASD is imprecise, with only 8 directions, unlike a controller.
  2. in order to press most action keys on WASD we have to lift a key off WASD when moving diagonally, changing the movement direction! THe only key this isn’t true for is spacebar/thumb/evade
  3. every other PC WASD game does it this way (only evade follows WASD direction)
  4. it works better…

I know this is is a PC WASD comment, but this is the controller movement support being applied to PC WASD.

Hi, I am having a problem in controller to compare rings with the second slot. For me the option only works when the auto-compare is on, and I don’t want to use auto-compare. So, when I disable it, I can’t compare the rings on the second slot, someone has it as well?
