Controller Implementation - Not yet acceptable for Console Release (obviously)

Hi!

I’m loving the game so far, with one notable exception that is largely my own fault for trying to play this game in a very round about way. I don’t have a good PC, so I’m using GeForce Now to play the game on my xbox. This means that I am playing the game ENTIRELY with a controller. I’ve heard the developers hope to launch on console soon, and in that light I wanted to provide my feedback on my experience as someone who is playing exclusively on a console already.

I took these notes as I was leveling up throughout the game, and now that I’m into monoliths this list has stopped growing:

  1. Not all items in the world can be interacted with with the controller and you need to switch to M&KB
    1. One quest required interacting with a corpse in the world and it would not work (Didnt record actual quest)
    2. Another quest required something like “pick the book from the shelf” and there was no option to use the ‘A’ button, had to plug in a mouse to pick the item in the world.

  2. Inventory controls are awkward, too much clicking through empty inventory spaces. need a hotkey for sort (suggest R3), need a hotkey for ‘transfer materials’ (suggest L3). I have a personal preference to manage my inventory as a list on console ARPGs (like how Diablo 3 handled it), but that said this will be a controversial opinion, though it is my personal preference. Even with the auto sort, controller players are still left clicking a button to navigate each square on the inventory grid.

  3. Need to be able to remap controller keys. ‘A’ should be able to be an attack, ‘Y’ should be able to be a skill. I want to use D pad to open inventory / skills / passives / forge (or whatever i want) not only zoom in/out. I was unsuccessful in being able to remap these keys after attempting multiple times. I’m not certain we have full remap support for a controller right now.

  4. Need a target lock function, or ranged builds will suffer. If you have a target lock key we can mimic a stutter step playstyle like PC is able to do. If you look at Diablo 3/4 you can lock to a target and shoot arrows at them and move away at the same time, if you dont have this kind of functionality melee skills will out perform ranged skills with a controller, who already lack the ability to target a specific area in the world with a mouse click.

  5. Need better hotkeys for running the forge. X to move to forge is great, but I need to be able to action the forge more quickly.
    1. When looking at runes you cant see the inventory without scrolling over with right stick to close the flyout menu.

  6. When allocating points into the Passive tree, OFTEN, one point goes to the node you highlighted and before you can allocate another point the selected node changes, and you allocate to the wrong node. Additionally I found that trying to select a different tree would often allocate points to some other item that is highlighted in the passive tree.

  7. Selecting a map node / quest / echo with right stick and pressing ‘A’ will not always take you to the correct node, you need to move the entire ‘camera’ and centre on the node you wish to travel to. this is unintuitive, also I just believe this is a bug.
    1. Echoes require selection with right stick, and press a.
    2. Map nodes require selection with left stick, and press a.

And if you let me wave my magic wand, I would wish for a dodge move to map to my right stick. This function exists in other games and feels AWESOME. I acknowledge this is a bit off topic of my feedback thread but here you go anways!

In short, the combat feels mostly great with a controller, the interactions with the world have their awkward moments but that can more easily be ironed out, but the inventory & systems interactions require a lot more TLC get this game in the right state for a true console release.

Thanks for the game, it’s legitimately great, I can’t wait for the console release so I can play there!
