I’m trying to get the skill to do exactly as the node describes. I have Chthonic Fissure active, it hits an enemy with an Infernal Shade on it, and most of the time the Infernal Shade isn’t consumed to deal its remaining damage.
Sometimes it does work, and when it does it seems to keep working for the rest of the Chthonic Fissure’s duration.
I’ve tried casting the skills in different orders and notice no difference in consistency.
For Chthonic Fissure I beeline with the nodes Fragile Crust → Spirit Gale → Severed Wards → Singed By Terror → Return Below. For Infernal Shade I tested it with no nodes and many nodes allocated, all to no avail.
I am also on Linux.

I was doing testing with this interaction and seem to find that the infernal shade will consume when you cast your initial fissure.
If you cast your 2nd fissure before the first fissure expire, it seem the shade will no longer be consume.
To make this interaction work again you will need to wait for the fissure to expire naturally first then recast your fissure.
I’m having the exact same issue with it. I have a build around this and the Infernal Shade’s Combustion node and when it works it’s like a machine gun of explosions as fast as I can cast, but it often doesn’t work at all.
It’s the spirits hitting the enemy with the shade on it that’s not triggering Return Below sometimes. I’ve experimented and found that no matter what order I try to do things in, it can get into a state where it’s not working at all. Then sometimes it works perfectly and I can cast shades at full cast speed and have them consumed as fast as I can cast by the spirits coming from the fissure. This in turn immediately triggers the Combustion explosion effect if it’s specced for a colossal burst of rapid damage. I’ll be checking to see if the Lingering Flames node has an affect on the overall interaction soon, as well.
