I’ve been playing some Frost claw, and I love the ability to have it proc on melee hit, plus having it have a chance to proc Ice Barrage.
However, it got me to thinking that the skills that proc should be up to the player to choose, instead of being built into the skill. Currently, it’s either you have it proc Ice Barrage, or you don’t. I think it would be great for build diversity if you could somehow pick what skill it could proc. Even skills from other classes.
One thing that Diablo 2 did great was not locking classes into their own skills, but letting them use skills from other classes. I think some type of ability to slot a piece of gear with a skill on it into the skill slot to be proced, and would allow you to specialize that skill as well would create amazing new builds synergies.
Also, all classes should have some access to this type of ability and it should be available on multiple skills to further enhance the diversity of builds/ play styles.
I’m kinda in two minds on this. I kinda would like to be able to choose what proc’d what, but I think that might be a bit excessive unless the modifiers (eg, mana cost or putting a damage reduction modifier on the proccing node) were able to be tweaked per proc’d skill.
There’s a PC + mobile ARPG game called Undecember that has a similar system. Essentially you can link a skill to 6 support gems(similar to PoE) but there is a spell proc on hit support gem which allows you to link 2 skills and then both the main and proc skills have 5 other supports. I played it sometime back and it was actually pretty fun. Game is free but with a lotta P2W for stash tabs and items and a lot of daily quest grinding(like mobile games) which is why I dropped it. But the base concepts and bossfights were really solid and taking a lot of inspiration from PoE.
I think LE is built around class identity and that amount of flexibility would kinda break the game but maybe we will get some more skill proc options with the Skilltree update (1.4 as per their plan?)
