Characters keep getting deleted

Every day for the past 3 days i create a Necromancer and begin leveling it following this guide: Necromancer, Level 100 (LE Beta 0.8.5c) - Last Epoch Build Planner

And the next day when i get home from work and launch Last Epoch to continue playing my necromancer it is deleted and i have to create a new one.

It’s such a bizarre bug and I’ve tried repairing the game, restarting the game, restarting my PC.
I have tried renaming the character.
I have tried not using any lootfilter.
I have tried creating a character and just logging out and the character is gone when i get back to the login screen.
I have tried unchecking “Ready Only” on the “Saves” folder.
I have NOT tried to reinstall the game yet though.
My account is not connected to Steam.

Any ideas on what is going on here?

Hey there…

This sounds like you might have a corrupted save file… It can be any of the existing saves, not just the one that disappears each time. This issue has been reported a handful of times before and savegame corruptions can happen - especially if the game crashed or didnt shutdown cleanly… Steam cloud is also a possible cause but you are not using it so thats not involved…

Please can you post your player.log - it might have a debug message related to a specific save that could help figure out what is going on.

A quick and dirty way to test this theory is to backup your Last Epoch saves folder while the game isnt running & then remove all the files from the saves folder… then create a new character, play a few minutes, exit to the character list, create another, play a few minutes and then exit the game entirely… After restarting then, if one or more of the test saves are gone then it will be something else… if the test saves are fine, then its probably something wrong with your save files…

warning - make sure your backup is good before attempting this test as there are no other copies of your files - only your local ones…

also. this assumes there isnt some other app that is backing up or locking files… thats a different problem entirely. and you dont have ghosts or a roommate that thinks they are funny…

Hey Vapourfire,

Here’s the player.log - I checked it and it seems like some files are corrupt just like you said.Player.log (38.3 KB)

I also tried creating a new character with a fresh “Saves” folder (i backed up the old one) and some very old characters appeared that i thought i had deleted before. But not the recent necromancers that i created.

When i created a new character it actually saved this time though!

Ok… I see the player.log refers to 1CHARACTERSLOT_BETA_2 as the problem file…

So you should be able to remove that file (and its _temp) and then based on your testing, you should be able to copy your saves back…

Old characters… not sure - if you deleted everything from the saves folder (including the global stash files) then it shouldnt have found old files… but that shouldnt be a problem if you copy everything back and try again.

Not sure why the issue happened in the first place, and if you were using Steam, I would suggest that you verify the game files just to make sure the install is ok. If you have a moment, I would suggest you try a reinstall of the standalone player just as a precaution against anything being wrong…

Hopefully you can get things going again smoothly…

One word of advice… I backup all my saves manually before any playsession - this way the worst that can happen is I lose a single period of progress on any chars and if the game crashes and something is corrupted, I can just restore everything without worrying about lost chars… I recommend you do similar… at least until the MP version lands and the saves can be server side…

Removing the BETA_2 files seems to have fixed the issue, but it never restored any characters. So here we go again, again :stuck_out_tongue:

Having to manually save every time i play seems very 1990’s, i hope they fix that. Would you suggest linking the account to steam?

Thank you for all your help btw!

Manually save… well, I do that with any EA/Beta game - I dont tend to do it with released ones that much… I dont want to find a 4LP bastion and then have a corrupted save somewhere - that would drive me insane…

You can setup a quick batch script on windows to just copy the files on a click of a shortcut if you wanted… nothing really complicated or timeconsuming…

Steam… I play via Steam but I do not use Steam Cloud - for my region, I find it just takes too long to sync and there is a side effect that if anything goes wrong Steam just blindly copies the mistake…

Help… np…
