Character screen selection - can't exit game if corrupted/missing data was detected

What went wrong?
During gameplay I got the “Corrupted or missing data detected” popup window. So I finished my run, left the game to my char selection screen, and realized I couldn’t exit the game there

The “corrupted data” popup blocks the buttons in the character selection screen - see screenshot, bottom left:
