I’ve been playing this game off and on for a month or so. I started a mage and had him up to level 51. I play on my main desktop system most of the time, but occasionally play on my laptop as well. I’ve had no issues doing this, switching between the systems without character issues. This weekend, I added a new drive to my main desktop and installed Linux Mint on it. As I had finished setting everything up and installing Steam, I noticed this game had Linux support. Super! I installed the game and got in, only to be disappointed to see that it showed I had no characters. Not sure what the issue was, I started a new character and everything went well. This morning I went to login on my laptop and noticed that only the new character showed up and that my mage was gone. Is there an issue with the Steam cloud save that caused this? Like I said, I was switching between two systems previously without issues, so I’m not sure what changed.
Hey there… Welcome to the forums…
My gut feeling is that Steam Cloud Save has messed up… I dont personally use it because of problems I have had in the past (in other games) with it not syncing things properly…
As the files are local (and the savegames are the same on either Windows or Linux) you could also copy them over to a usb or something when you want to play elsewhere - and this has a secondary benefit of making sure you have a backup… I know steam cloud is meant to be easier but its not the most reliable imho.
You could check here and see if any of these support suggestions from Steam help.
You can also get to your Steam cloud via a browser using the following link
EDIT: Obviously when Multiplayer drops and you have the option of server based characters then this problem becomes less of an issue unless you want to play offline.
One more info: all save files comme with a _TEMP file. Maybe try to see if they are still present, it could be a way to restore your character.
Thanks for the responses. I checked and my local files and Steam cloud files are the same, which to me indicates they were overwritten with only the recent files (file dates are 9/6 and 9/7) which seem to bear this out since my mage character was older than 9/6. I’m very disappointed in this since I’d leveled the character that high and since there was a ton of loot and crafting materials in the shared stash. Doesn’t look like I have any recourse, so I guess I’ll need to ensure I back up my Steam cloud character data on occasion to ensure this doesn’t occur again.
Or disable Steam cloud and do the manual savegames… The key either way is to make backups…
