Character appearance shouldn't dictate class!

Why stick to the old Diablo-style approach? Why not let players choose their character’s appearance first and then their class? I want to experience all classes, but some character designs completely turn me away. The freedom to mix and match would make the game far more engaging.
Last Epoch is way better than Diablo, so why stick to outdated conventions instead of a modern approach?

Let me guess…
You don’t want to be forced to play an Old Man or a Goth Girl?

Resources… doing things like this take time and human labour.
They don’t even have specific sprites for each unique item yet… The character appearence being static is really the smallest of all problems the game still has.

Won’t lie, the main reason I haven’t even tried mage is because of him being the grandpa. However I can understand the resources needed to implement this, as the character model is tied to hundreds of other assets, from armor to buff effects. Humble advice to EHG is to address models before they make too many MTX armor and vfx.

It actually makes no difference when they do it. The required effort will always be doubled (assuming just gender choice, which is the most requested feature. If we assume a free customization model, it would either jump exponentially or would require redoing the whole system).

I personally doubt we’ll see any change in this for quite some time. I don’t expect them to start working on this for a few years, at least, considering that not every unique is finished with the current models alone.
And, according to Mike, creating a new unique is a lot faster than creating the render for that unique, so it will be hard to catch up even with just the 5 different models.

It is about the workflow. Adapting given armor mesh to 10 models instead of 5 is more efficient than returning to those armors several years later, by then you’ll probably have different standards between oldest and newest MTX.

GGG once brazenly promised to convert their entire store from poe1 to poe2, and to not make new MTX for poe2 until everything from poe1 is ready. Now they try not to mention this too often and have released several new poe2 packs already :slightly_smiling_face:

Sure, but the overall total of renders you have to make is the same whether you make it now or later. And if you make it now, you’ll only be releasing half the MTX each season, since you need to create twice the renders for each.

As I said, I don’t think this will happen anytime soon, if at all.
I know the devs would like to add it, but there are way more important things for the game than character customization, which usually only the loaded studios like Blizzard can afford, which is why it’s rare to see it in an ARPG.
Especially because you end up not seeing the model once you gear up anyway.

Which is unfortunate btw. Hide helmet is the basic feature in every piece of software with a character. Wish LE would’ve had it too.

And yet most don’t have it. Especially ARPGs. And more especially loot based ones.

To be fair, it’s the class that determins the character appearance & this is the genre standard with very few departing from it (GD & TQ being the only to “big” ones & GD probablyonly did it becausethey inherited the TQ engine so everything was set up for it).

Character customization is a feature of another genre, same for “hide my helmet”. I wish EHG don’t spread resources on that useless crap, they got a lot of bugs to fix and other more, more important stuff to do.

Yeah those things are kinda good, but not now! When the game is finished, now it’s kinda still raw. Better than season 1, but still feel’s not complete.

We didn’t see 3d models for uniques in PoE for years. It’s totally okay.
