Calculations

How would I calculate resistances and dodge?

Dodge formula is shown when you hover over it if I remember correctly. Protections I think you add to your health.

Damage mitigation from protections is 1 - (health + ward) / (health + ward + protection). Though the game already gives you the mitigation from protections on the character screen.

A simple figure though, if hp = protection then youā€™re getting 50% mitigation, if protection = 2x health then youā€™ll get 66%, etc.

Iā€™m working on a builder so i need the formula how to get to percentage. For example 100HP and 15 in protection gives me 13% protection, how to get to that percentage? also the same for
dodge. for example 29 dodge rating gives 20% dodge chance I know it also depends on area level, what would be best formula to get percentage?

i find the wording on protections to be massively confusing. first they are explained as extra EHP against the damage type, which is clear enough. you have X more health against the given elements. where it gets confusing for me is when they refer to this as a percentage reduction.

letā€™s say you have 1000 health, and 1000 of a given protection. thatā€™s 2000 EHP versus that element, which the game refers to as ā€œ50% protectionā€. this seems contradictory. if you take a hit of 1000 damage of only that element, if your protections act as HP, you would take no damage to your health pool from the hit, but if they act as mitigation, you would take 500 damage to your health pool.

i feel like this system should be changed to be clearer, but maybe iā€™m misunderstanding something. i donā€™t see the problem with using the well-established ā€œelemental resistancesā€ seen in other games, since itā€™s clear that ā€œ75% resistanceā€ means exactly what it says.

edit: realizing that this is fairly off-topic for the question in the OP, maybe iā€™ll make one of those fancy Suggestions threads about itā€¦ iā€™ll have to reword it to be aggressively sure of myself and tout my years of experience with other ARPGs as evidence of how i canā€™t possibly be wrong. /s

I gave you the protection figure.

I collected data from chapters 1-7:

Edit: Iā€™ve done a back-of-a-fag-packet calculation & if you use the same type of formula for dodge chance as damage mitigation from protections (dodge chance = dodge rating / (dodge rating + area lvl*10)) then you get something thatā€™s fairly close for high levels but decidedly wonky for low levels (though the r-squared is ~0.9487, which isnā€™t too bad.

Thatā€™s why theyā€™re called protections rather than resistances, they donā€™t work the same way as in other games (where theyā€™re absolute resistances), in LE they are relative (to your HP).

If you think about it as the damage you take being spread evenly over your hp & your protection, so if you have protection = hp, then only half of the damage will be applied to your hp (health / (health + protection). If protection = 3x hp, then only 1/4 would be applied to your hp.

i wrote what ended up being an extremely long reply, so i made a new thread to avoid derailing this one any further than i already have! Do Protections need a rework?

Thanks guys I got dodge formula to work now onto protection.
I still didnā€™t play this game much so can some1 tell me what is max area level?

Edit: Though IMO, it should go higher than 100 on the empowered timelines. Maybe up to 160 (starting at 100 on an empowered Fall of the Outcasts & gaining 10 per monolith up to 160 on an empowered Dragonā€™s Reign).

Tunk did some awesome work on this Dodge Chance
