Bug bashing plan?

Hello,

I have more than 400 hours on LE and lately i have noticed we get more and more bugs instead of having less and less, heading to 1.0.

I am genuinely worried about the game being in a correct state for release.

These days I am playing every night, and for each session of a few hours, I could at least report 12 bugs that I see everyday. Some of them, like the Monolith missions map switching to the wrong era, have been here for MONTHS. This is embarrassing.

I would love to see LE to launch successfully. But the existing content is already so riddled with bugs that adding new content on top of that is kinda concerning. It was NOT like that 1 or 2 years ago.

So I am asking the dev team: are you worried about the quantity of bugs, or are you confident that 1.0 will be stable and bug-free?

Thanks and gl

Iā€™m not a dev ā€¦ well I am, but not from EHG ā€¦ and I can assure youā€™ll never hear ā€œweā€™re not worried about the quantity of bugsā€.

I donā€™t remember the source but it was mentioned that 0.9.2 will have a massive list of bugfixes as well as replacement for the network library because it sends too much data, so I think in a couple of weeks weā€™ll have a way clearer picture of the gameā€™s current state.

Thatā€™s from juddā€™s reddit post

The entire Quality Control section of my unofficial roadmap post is very relevant to this post, including these few additional posts from the developers on this subject:

Just get ready for the inevitable 1.0 delay :+1:

If I was in their shoes Iā€™d never announced LE for this year. To much to do to little time. Okay if we play a build that is 6 months old then maybe they get it done but if we have THE build right nowā€¦ nah either delay it or get in line to be the next clownfiesta release 2023.

I am not usually one to be pessimistic about this kind of thing - I tend to give devs the benefit of the doubtā€¦ BUTā€¦ the recent announcement of an early class addition that will come before 1.0 (unlike previous promises), makes me worry that they may be setting us up for a potential delay.

and I expect that they may have realised that play numbers may be in a lull - especially from longer term / veteran players who are waiting for more to do - and decided to up the ante and release a class earlier to keep everyone interestedā€¦

cynical on my part, but as much as I want to believe 1.0 by the end of the year, I too am doubtful.

Iā€™m just a very experienced optimist thatā€™s all ^^.

Yeaah, i donā€™t really believe 1.0 is this year unless they wanna deliver completely broken product just to say ā€œthey done itā€

If we look at the current version of the game

0.9 and 0.9.1 were in worse state than say 0.8 so theyā€™ve had some serious regression and to fix all that + add in another 2 classes + factions in 4 months? Yeah i doubt that

0.9.2 is very likely to break something too so thats gonna need to be fixed before 1.0 too

With you on this. It doesnt really make practical sense when you just look at the time left vs work to do. Definitely agree that they had some regression when they merged the codebases which hasnt helped things either.

Even without knowing exactly how much they have actually already done internally or what pressures they are under from investors etc, I worry that going hell for leather and attempting to meet an arbitrary deadline could end up burning the devs out too - and that would cause an even longer delay imho.

I realise that its the last lap and the end is in sight, but its most definitely NOT a downhill sprint at the end of the marathon - its probably the exact opposite.

Or, they got it to a point that theyā€™re happy with it and want to get it out early. If theyā€™re squashing a bunch of bugs in this upcoming release, putting out one of the new masteries to run it through ā€˜biggerā€™ paces will give them a head start on squashing bugs for that, meanwhile they can shift focus to Falconer and Warlock and let the bug team handle Runemaster leading up to 1.0.

Either way it is what it is. Iā€™ve honestly never understood (not just pointed at you, to be clear) this need to speculate when there are sooooo many unknowns to us. But, Iā€™ve also never been into sports watching and quarterbacking from my recliner and that is an institution in Futbol and Football so clearly no one ever listens to me on opinions about popular things.

All that said, I think weā€™re likely to see a delay. No problems with that actually. But I do think they should announce it soonā„¢ because if they donā€™t tell us before 4th quarter, I know for a fact that will cause even MORE bad blood then the naysayers who will come out of the woodwork when 0.92 drops.

This is probably the primary issue hereā€¦ Everyone speculates because we dont have more than Andrews pieced together roadmap to go onā€¦ I understand EHGs reluctance to produce details of where they are at, but its a fine line to tread. Maybe they have actually finished WAY more than we know or maybe notā€¦ My personal issue is that I have been involved in tech / development and being on the outside usually means you have to take a pragmatic approach because there is always something that isnt finished, still broken, not ideal come launch day.

In EHGs defence, they are one of the most open dev houses wrt to this kind of thing and tend not to treat us like Mushrooms generally so I am still hopeful.

yeah, thats my feeling tooā€¦ be up front about it and most will probably be ok, not happy but okā€¦ leave it to the last second when everyones getting hyped and the disapointment is likely to far greater.

Well, Iā€™ve never had a good reaction when I told my boss my deliverable would be late ā€“ on the day it was due. If I come open about it ahead of time, then adjustments in expectations can be made.

Of course, I also live by the mantra, ā€˜Better to under-promise, and over-deliverā€™.
