Base damage of a skill?

Where can I see this? The skill only displays DPS as a total of all buffs/skills etc on the tooltip. The guide states the base damage is shown on the tooltip which is not true, it shows DPS.

I think the best way to know is to use the target dummies. That part I think is fine, however I wish there was some more data available from the dummies, like how much damage from each type we do, burst DPS, sustained DPS and so on, and split out on skill too.

Have you tried holding alt on the skill tab tooltip? Sometimes they put the base damage there. Apart from that LEtools has all skill, subskill, etc base damage.

There is almost never any information about base damage in actual game. Definitely weird design choice. Especially with how scaling in this game is centered around flat damage sources.

Forget about ‘‘special skills’’ that are inside normal skills as procs etc. Or any Minion base dmg.

You have to look up each skill on third party websites. Generally the game follows a theme - if it costs a lot of mana then it will most likely have higher added damage effectiveness and higher base damage.

So for example Lightning Blast from Mage is a 3 mana ‘‘spammer’’ skill with low dmg of 21 and low added damage effectiveness of 100%.

Meteor on the other hand costs 56 mana, deals 180 dmg with added damage effectiveness of 900%.

Then ofc you have some outliers like basically entire Falconer class with stuff like Dive Bomb and Aerial Assault that absolutely do not follow the formula of earlier masteries.

I am using Last Epoch tools website personally - especially for anything that is a Minion,Totem,Companion or extra stuff like item procs or skill procs. Oh and also Invocations for Runemaster - good luck trying to figure out anything with just in game tooltips

Thank you for that analysis. I am always struck how every game like this has so little transparency for skills/damage/effects, even a more independent studio like this one. Is there a reason they hide things from their players? Is it just to slow people down from making too powerful builds? In an age where streamers do that for people, I am not sure why it is a continued practice. It is frustrating for people who want to make the best decisions for which skills to use.

Not sure - to me it’s extremely weird to not have base damage of skills. I remember tooltips got a makeover/improvements in beta at some point.

Current tooltips are what you would expect as far as industry standards go. Most of stuff is there besides base damage. Keywords and scaling are always there. For sure Minions are most overlooked - there wont be any mention at all that for example all Golems got 3 different attacks and 133% threat modifier.

I played most aRPGs in the last 20 years including indie 1 man arpgs - Torchlight Infinite has best skill tooltips by far. There is a shorter ‘‘normal’’ version and then more detailed one for all the juicy stuff. That is on top of having best target dummy system as well (it measures your actual dps).

But ye you GOT TO have base damage of skills for sure. Especially for ‘‘newer’’ skills and masteries it’s very evident as they are more complex compared to older masteries.

I hope the devs eventually improve that aspect of tooltips in the future patches. But for now you gotta rely on the work of community for actual 100% accurate tooltips.

They are planning on updating the character screen which is likely (/hopefully) to give you the detailed info you want.

I didn’t play much yet, but indeed that’s a bit annoying to not have the important numbers you’d want for each skill. If the displayed DPS was at least accurate, sure. But it’s not the case at all, you can’t rely on it, so you can’t compare anything outside of testing them yourself (or checking online) and see how it goes. Which to be fair, considering how the game encourages you to experiment with low respec costs, isn’t totally absurd. But i don’t like this design path in general, and i’m more on the side of giving the important info to the players in general.

DPS tooltip is especially useless for any kind of skill/item procs. Biggest offenders are skills that do not have base dmg OR dps values at all - basically entire Falconer class if you play with Falcon Strikes, Dive Bomb, Aerial Assault and Ballista.

You can see the base damage, without any buffs, on a third-party site like lastepochtools. But you’re probably interested in the damage per hit, rather than damage per second, of your current skills. I don’t think there’s an in-game way to see it (which is quite unfortunate for a game that otherwise seems to go out of its way to show info).

The best way I can suggest is to calculate what the cast speed of the skill is (by looking up its base cast speed on a third-party site, and multiplying by your increase cast speed, as shown in game, and then divide the DpS, as shown by that.

For example - if your skill shows 600 DpS, its base cast speed is 2 (meaning 2 casts per second), and your increased cast speed is 50%, then:

  • Your real cast speed is 2 * 1.5 = 3
  • Since the game calculates DpS by multiplying skill damage by cast speed, you can figure damage by dividing 600 by 3 to get 200 damage per hit.
