Anybody have experience with the Radeon RX6800 XT

I am going to be building a new rig soon. I would have done it around Xmas time if there were 3080’s available. It seems the GFX shortage will continue which is putting a damper on my little compulsion to build a new rig. So I am thinking about crossing the lane and getting a AMD card.

My question is does anybody have experience with the Radeon RX 6800 XT? It appears more readily available since the drought for 3080’s is going to continue and I am not going to buy a sniped GPU at an inflated price.

I haven’t had a Radeon card in over 13 years…Is it better to pair the GPU with a Ryzen rather than an intel CPU? I was just thinking about heat because I have heard that the 5900 series Ryzen get super hot…plus I can get a higher end i9 at a lower price tag; However, I am not sure about motherboard costs.

How does the RX 6800 XT perform? It looks really good on paper. Thanks

@Bax has one & he says it’s fast as #### in cyberpunk (in 1440 with everything on max) & it’s way cooler than his old Vega 64. I wouldn’t worry too much about using an Intel cpu/Nvidia gfx card & an AMD gfx card/Intel cpu. The only thing you need to look out in that regard is whether your monitor is a freesync (AMD) or g sync (Nvidia).

If you can get any of the 6800XT/3080 tier cards I’m sure you’ll be happy.

Edit: I wouldn’t expect it to give you hundreds of FPS in LE in certain situations, since LE is more CPU-bound than GFX-bound.

Thanks mate!

Hi

After 20 years of building rigs with Intel & nVidia, I crossed the line last year and built a system with a Ryzen 7 CPU and 5700 XT GPU. I have found the actual hardware to be pretty good on the whole, my only problem has been in the fact that AMD Radeon drivers are not the best, you can experience issues with them, and it is a faff if you just want the drivers alone because they force you to install the whole Radeon “package” (although it is possible to do a driver only install, as long as you can stop MS operating system from immediately installing generic ones whilst you are doing it!)

I think next time I will be reverting back to what I know and am happy with (i.e. Intel/RTX), but I hear ya, and the current availability of GPUs has blown the prices through the roof, even if you can get them. On the whole I have been pretty happy with the performance of the card and its ability to run games on high spec, but it has taken me quite a while to get to that point, and if I ever have to upgrade to a new driver then it will be with some trepidation. I guess it is just like anything else in the world of PC gaming - some good experiences, some not so good. As I said, I am happy overall, but will still take nVidia over this anyday :+1:

Personally I wouldn’t know since you can’t get them for love nor body parts (I’ve even offered people some of my children).

Wasn’t it always the case with AMD? Solid hardware nvidia would be proud of with drivers that seem to be made by an internship?

Sadly yes, you are quite right. Ah well, at least in a ever changing world. it’s good to know that there is a constant that you can rely on
