Wonder what everyone would think about allowing any class to choose any mastery tree. They would have access to that tree, along with the skills that come with it, and their own 3 trees. I think this would give a nice bit more customization to players and class would still matter as the base class skills would still be locked for the class. It could also be made so that only the official 3 masteries for the class are shown when picking with a small button somewhere that will show the rest as to not overwhelm new players.
I can see too many problems with that system in its current state. Biggest part is balance of course, but the devs would also need to rework animations for each class which takes alot of time i guess. Choosing a passive tree “only” gives you access to mastery skills. What about the base skills that you miss? The game has such a good skill system with alot of synergies between them. Devs would need to rework every skill within the skilltree to make cross class skills work with each other. Sure it would be fun to run around with a bow as a paladin, i get your point and the benefits with build diversity. But the amount of effort and time you have to put in to make this work properly could be immense. I can already see how multiplayer balancing can be tough with all the current builds. Some games are doing well with big customizable build diversity, some games are doing well with class identity. I like LE with its current class identity system.
