If you have 1 affix shard left and craft it on an item it still stays in the crafting slot. Its not in the list of your affix shards anymore, but you can still use it. Doing this causes you to have -1 of that shard and it appears in the affix shard list again. Using an affix shard while you have -1 makes you have 0 of that shard afterwards and you can repeat that cycle.
