As for now, anyone can add me as a friend and see my online status - without my permission. There should be some kind of “Send friend request” - “Accept friend request” mechanic or at least some option to appear as offline or something like that.
I haven’t noticed this feature at all, but i will add my 2 cents anyway about possible implementations.
Some time ago i was playing certain MMORPG. It has friend list. You can add people (actually their avatar, no alts) to it without their permission. There is no reason for permission there because online status is public anyway. Friend list is just a convenience there. Short list of characters, their class and level (all are public) and notifications when they go online/offline. Again, all this is publicly available. You have an option to go “anon” there, so you’re not listed in global list and therefore your status is not shown in somebody’s friend list. It’s a one-way relation with no real perks, so it’s ok.
Now if friend status was to give someone any priviledges over that person (like seeing them being anon or autoaccept into group or whatever), then yes, request/accept mechanism is absolutely essential or abuse WILL happen.
So how did LE handle this? In 300+ hours i haven’t played in group even once so i have no clue
I don’t know, if I get you right, so I just answer your question: at the moment, anyone can add you to their own friednlist an see yout online status with the character you are online from there on. You never get a notice, you have been added, nor can you hide your online status in any way.
Edit: Just found an option to appear as offline. So my point is not as important, as I thought. I still think it would be nice to have some kind of choice, if someone adds you to his friendlist.
