Acolyte's Harvest would feel better if it alternated direction

Animation-wise, the fact that Harvest only swings in one direction feels not as good as the Primalist’s Swipe, which alternates direction as you cast it.
Harvest would feel like it had more weight if it alternated direction while continually casting it.

Have you ever mowed grass with a scythe? It is always in one direction

Absolutely agree with OP, I already gave feedbackabout that, when they did the teaser in some dev blog.

This because more and more unpleasant, the mroe attack speed you have.

Generally the SFX and VFX look and feel really great, the alternate swinging would make this perfect.

But what @Gilavar said is important and even if you take a look at a battlescyth that was actually used in fighting you havve little to none options motion wise.

How so? You’d just rotate the model & move it in the other direction.

I don’t know what you consider a “battle scythe”, but Scythes as a proper weapon in combat are a product of fantasy.

Scythes were only used in combat during medieval times from peasant, during revolts and such, because they couldn’t afford proper weaponary.
Scythes are horrifically bad to handle and super clunky during real combat.
(If you look at the shape of a real scythe (one that was actually used as a tool) you will understand)

The only Scythe-like weapons that were used in some regions were more like Polearms, that had a scythe-blade
Like this one:

But for the point I am trying to make:
This is a video game and its not about realism.
Harvest conjours some magical necrotic scythe so yes you can absolutely alternate the animations without being “unrealistic” (as unrealistic as conjouring necrotic energy can be).

The ones these guys are using even thou theirs are the tools the real weapon has a fixated head more like a Warpick.

What do you want to prove here?
Serious question: Did you ever held a scythe in real life?

This is a fictional illustration of a situation that would very likely never have happened.

People fighting each other with scythes is even more unrealistic then this whole discussion.
(Both people in your image don’t have peasant clothes. They would never use scythes for any type of combat situation)
If these were used as combat weapons, the chances of opposing sides both using scythes is basically not existing, because usually if they were used by peasants they didn’t fight other peasants.

On top of that using a scythe as a “warpick” is also not very effective, depending on how the scythe is manufactured exactly.
A lot of scythe blades are very thin and not super robust.
If you would use them with a hacking motion the blade would deform very easily, especially when used against armour or the first time hitting bones.

I am all about having some-what realistic things in video games, that historically could have made sense.
But having scythes as bad ass weapons and having Reapers floating around is definitely not one of them.

That would likely be the case regardless of how you swing the scythe. They are, after all, made to cut through crops not armour or bone. It one was going to make a weapon, you wouldn’t shape it like a scythe.

The pic is from a book by Paulus Hector Mairs called “De Arte Athletica”. Noone is sure if it was something actualy used by a lot of people but it works as good as something can work using a tool that was made for cutting neer the ground in horizontal swings.

Then again on the topic… the whole Harverst animation looks ugly af to me to be honest. Like a windshield wiper that used to much of this smelly spray that you use to remove splatters on your windshield while driving. On top of it I think the color theme that is used isn’t that appealing to me so it’s maybe this… the direction of the skill is the last thing that bothers me on the skill.

Ironically, they alternate direction…

That’s what makes it even worse  . I just remember the goo on my fathers car windshield he tried to get rid off… looked almost 1:1 like Harvest ingame.
