I do like the dedicated aspect. The people still playing D2R have helped me immensely on the forums and in game. Offering low budget trades, advice, tokens. One guy helped me kill Uber Diablo for a charm… there’s definitely a bonus to the small but dedicated base.
To be fair, this was always the case with D2. Even at its peak you had plenty of people that gave you stuff, helped you kill stuff, gave you carries, etc. It’s something that’s kinda been lost in other games, though not completely.
To be fair, you have to take out the builds that abused bugs, i.e. exploding ballista, profane veil + bone prison.
Indeed, I’m doing that right now with my buddy who picked it back up. Gave him all the gear I found for his class to help out. Wish I could do that in LE, I have pages of Uniques for not my class, but I can’t give them to my friend or my son. And I don’t know what the drop rate is on those essences or what not that allow trading, but I have none of the purple ones. Just let me trade man.
Logging in after work and having someone on your friends list whisper that they found something you might need was always a welcome surprise. I don’t understand the reasoning behind EHGs decision on this one. Def one of the things I’d like to see changed.
Yes, I agree and totally understand. I also like when a friend is new to the game and I just dump a bunch of items to make it easier for him.
I think the resonances are meant to deter RMT. It’s clearly not working because there are other ways to RMT.
You can always make an MG char, and have your friend make one as well, and you can direct trade for 1g to give him stuff, as long as both have enough favor.
If EHG gets rid of direct trade to try and control RMT, then I can see resonances staying. In which case maybe after x number of hours playing along with someone the game considers them a “true friend” and you can freely trade with them from then on?
And if they don’t get rid of direct trade, maybe they can get rid of resonances and just let us give stuff freely?
I don’t think RMT can ever be prevented. And the half-measures in the game are more of a hinderance for legit players than anything else.
Although, to be fair, there are 2 big factors in why the community became that way in D2 and both are related to game limitations:
1- You had very limited stash space. So when you pick up stuff you have no need for anymore, you get rid of it. So might as well just give it to someone else rather than throwing it on the ground.
2- You always had to go through the game list. Whether you were making a new private game or a public one, or looking for one, you always saw the list. So it wasn’t uncommon for new players to be getting ready to create a new game and seeing one on the list called “Free stuff” or whatever.
Likewise, if you were making a new game and already had a powerful alt, if you saw a game that said “Help ancients pls” or similar, you could quickly switch and go help.
So it’s not that I think the communities are less helpful these days, it’s that the tools and UIs of the game don’t facilitate that anymore. This is true for most games post-D2.
