2H Staff vs 1H & Off-Hand for an Acolyte Necromancer

I am new to Last Epoch so as such, I decided to go without a build guide ON MY FIRST CHARACTER as a way to learn the game and the mecanics and the skills. BUT, at least for now, I went to Maxroll to get myself a loot filter for a build that was ‘close’ to what I have in mind (I am playing a permanent minions build).

My question is related to the fact that in many places in that filter, it says to hide anything that is not a 2H staff and I would like to understand the reasons behind this. I mean for weapons and off-hands as it is not hiding boots, belts, helmets, etc.

I mean, I understand after checking some items that the affixes seems stronger on a 2 handed weapon. But at the same time, using a one hand and a off-hand (like a shield for example) means having double the amount of affixes, resistances, etc. So it seems a bit more flexible into surviving the content (I am still in the campaign right now).

Without spoiling me, I would like to understand the reasons there. I am aware I can edit the filter myself to make these items visible but I want to understand why it was made like this in the first place.

Thanks in advance.

I assume the build you were looking at has some specific affixes they want that are only available on 2H

If I go to lastepochtools.com I see Wands can have any of 14 Prefixes and 14 Suffixes. Staves are at 24 & 19

More specifically, Staves get Minion Melee + Bow and Minion Melee + Spell suffixes in addition to the Minion Bow + Spell that Wand also gets. (Scepters don’t get Minion Melee + Bow, but do get the other 2)

On top of that, Staves can also have +1 Minion skills on the base item, which is again something Wand lacks.

So for a full minion build, you’ll probably want to run Staves unless you are aiming for specific 1H or Offhand uniques to use.

I was not aware of the existence of that website so I’ll take a look.

But it would make sense. I’ll go back to that build page for the list of affixes they seek vs those I am using right now (since I do not follow the guide at the moment) and see then if it would be better to go for one or the other.

So thanks for the answer there.

You can perfectly make your own filters, and I would even urge you to go watch a “how to” youtube vid over just copying one from somewhere, but it does require you to know what affixes are possible.

Both lastepoch.tunklab.com and LEtools are good resources for those, the ingame filter is designed to be broader, so it uses the full affix list. e.g. It’s possible to filter for all affixes you want on all gear slots, and then unselect the slots you have your build’s legendary in.

Even if you don’t want the affix on that slot, it would still give you a Rune of Shattering target, and it’s faster to enable/disable e.g. resistances when you have enough of them overall vs going through each slot filter.

Even if I copied the filter over, I still spend some time to understand how it works a little. I mean, since I do not follow the guide, it means my current list of affixes is different than what is in the build.

I’m planning on looking at the details more when I will reach end game.

If your playing Acolyte for the first time my suggestion is to not use any loot filter until level 20.

That way you can pick which skills your going to level with initially then at level 20 plus you could filter out normal and blue rarities as you will still need to upgrade to gold gear unless you already have uniques waiting in the bank.

Also I have gotten some set items and unique items early on and bank them for my alt characters.

If you filter out certain weapons or armor types or make it so you only see certain gear with certain affixes you might miss out on some potential good gear.

I have a level 90 Necromancer, 27 Warlock 19 Beast master, 15 Void Knight 20 Falconer 10 Mage.

All of my alts have several uniques which made it somewhat easier everytime I started a new character.

Of course I encourage you to play the way you enjoy the game. I just wanted to add my perspective from an old school gamer.

Good hunting.

I had my “own” filter for the first 12 levels or so but I wanted to play so getting an existing one was faster. Still, when I see a yellow item on the ground, I sometimes desactivate the filter to see the item and understand why it is hidden. This is how I found about shields and wands actually, which led me to my original question.

Right now I play for the story. I’ll have all the time in the world after the campaign to be efficient and optimized

That’s good to hear!

Ihope you enjoy the campaign, good hunting.

I do. I am in chapter 8 with my level 53 (nearly 54) necromancer and I enjoy exploding things left and right for sure

I also enjoy the start. Refreshing to see something different from other games.

I am at 25 hours played so I assume I’ll be close to 35 by the end of the campaign. 1$ per hour played is a mega deal for sure!
keuf Shame on you D4 * keuf*

*Checks Steam hours logged, then looks to the left*

Yeah, a buck an hour seems right, if I include all my stream donations and subs over the years.

Give me a break, I started on the 21st

Let’s just say I’ve probably spent as much in this game as someone who bought every single D4 MTX, although at $70 per horse, that might be getting close

Still, $1/hour is very cheap entertainment, even if I lost a few bucks this week on server issues.
