+10 % to shock on hit

Can anyone shed some light on how to interpret this? It was an Idol affix but I have seen similar language elsewhere as well.

  1. Does this make non-shock actions able to shock on hit?
  2. And does “hit” include spell hits but not AoE?

Thanks!

I think +X% shock on hit should work with any action.

Let me give you an example:
Forge guard has a passive node that grants +X% chance to bleed on hit and +X% chance to ignite on hit.
With this node, my physical AoE spell has a chance to ignite enemies or make them bleed, and so is my fire spell.

Hit includes everything that does damage that is not damage over time. Some skills only do damage over time and those are the only ones not able to proc on hit effects. For example, your cold damage will be able to apply a shock which is lightning based. It won’t benefit from it since it is a cold skill, but it will proc it. If you apply shock, for example with a cold skill, that lightning penetration you get from it will benefit any other skill you have that does lightning dmg, even those that are damage over time.

Any skill that doesn’t have the DoT tag will hit (though some like Hungering Souls have the DoT tag because it hits & applies a DoT) & can apply any & all “chance to XXX on hit” ailments.

Thanks to all!
