1.2 Steamdeck Feedback/Opinions

Made a Feedback post about how I feel about Controller in 1.2 but figured I’d create a General Discussion post to, well, discuss it.

Steam Deck Notes: There’s some really bad performance hits in the weirdest places. Firstly the fire forest in the tutorial, but only where you meet the Barbarian dude (cannot remember his name, sorry bro) and then the next significant hit was in the Weyllryn Outskirts (or however you spell it) but only when the zombies or their corpses are on screen, and only in this zone, those same mobs cause 0 issues anywhere else they show up. It’s very strange lol.

Controller:
Oh my Eterra, the new targetting system is simultaneously the best and worst thing in 1.2 controller changes. The ability to kite is significantly better, but only if there’s a single enemy on the screen (or all enemies are in the same direction) as soon as a “target” is in the direction your character is moving, all targetting logic goes out the window and you’ll be attacking in completely random directions. I haven’t tried melee, but I had no issues with melee pre-1.2 so it might be fine in 1.2, but I also didn’t have issues with Ranged skills going where I didn’t want them with ranged pre-1.2. I tried going back to the pre-1.2 targetting but the kiting is so nice when it works that it was like a choice between better kiting or more consistent targetting.

Menuing with controller is about as good (read: bad) as ever, idk why it feels so clunky to navigate the skill tree and passive tree with controller in LE compared to TQ or GD. Inventory is fine until you try to equip idols, then you need to use the right stick. And comparing off-hand rings/weapons still doesn’t work or I’m doing something wrong.

Anyone else try 1.2 controller? What’s your experience?

So, it’s sad, but the best controller experience so far has been to not use the controller.

I saved my template for controller just in case (because I added Back button bindings and changed the right trackpad to work as the Select Radial menu) then I loaded up the Steam Default Keyboard (WASD) controller template, changed the right stick to be a half-screen “Mouse-region”, then modified the D-pad and Face buttons to be menu options: Up is Map, Down is Portal, left and right are Passives + Skills | A is Left Click, B is Esc, X is the loot filter, and pressing Y is Inventory (hold Y is Forge). LB is 1 for potions, RB is Space for Evade, then L4/R4/L5/R5 are Q/R/E/F respectively. Left Stick Click is Ctrl+Alt for offhand comparisons (auto-compare is on by default)

I can aim everything I need to aim, access everything I need to access, and there’s no wonky auto-targetting like the new 1.2 controller has.

Sadly, this means console ports won’t be able to manage, but anyone on steam can have a great controller experience by turning on WASD controls (which I hear aren’t great with the actual keyboard and mouse?)

IDK? I really like the controller play on the game it feels good! Menu is clunky a bit but not horrible! I just wish my controller cursor speed would stay at 4/5 in settings and not reset to default EVERY time I open the game.
