One of the issues I had with PoE was the constant addition of new league mechanics to the base game. It made the game unnecessarily complex to start and harder for newer players to grasp. Also, GGG ended up with upset players as some less successful mechanics these players still enjoyed got dropped. You have a neat way around this. As time passes and you add leagues/mechanics/timelines, you can move the completed ones to some of the new monoliths you said would be coming later. That way those who enjoyed those rewards/mechanics could replay to their hearts’ content. And you could be picky (and minimize upsetting players) about adding or changing the game up to monoliths or empowered.
At least for the foreseeable future, cycles (LE’s version of leagues/seasons) are expected to be more like mini-expansions to the game until they’ve added all of the features they feel are core to the overall experience. You can read more about what the dev’s have said about cycles here, which admittedly isn’t much as many of the details aren’t fully known or nailed down as of yet.
It’ll likely be some time after launch before seasonal mechanics are something we’ll need to worry about. But yes, I imagine LE will eventually suffer from similar issues and complaints from players over what becomes “core” or not.
