Growing playing classic ARPGs its commonplace for classes to be gender locked. That being said its understandable the need for more customization. The devs are so willing to change things for their loyal fanbase that if people like yourself speak out more maybe we could see a change in time. For now at least armor hides gender basically in late game. Cheers.
I could care less about the gender locked classes. But if people need it SO badly that they wouldn’t play the game then fine. I’ll vote for it to be in. I don’t get it but the more people that play the game the longer the game will live lol.
LOL, we’ve come full circle. The people who originally wanted more character customization in gaming were girl gamers who were forced to play games either as a male, or a highly sexualized female. Which is/was/always will be an entirely reasonable request (as always, all opinions are mine, and are not stated as fact).
Now the people who want to play as a particular character type are anti-woke. I’m male and I like to play male characters. There have been female posters in this thread who said they like to play female characters. EHG has said they’d eventually like to support this. But of course it has to be more than that, right? Every preference is an agenda.
The biases that we humans bring to every conversation are endlessly predictable, fascinating, sad and laughable. All at the same time. Especially if the topic is even tangentially related to sex (as in sexual reproduction). Which makes sense, I guess, evolutionarily speaking it’s the only conversation worth having (other than eating and surviving predation or disease).
Ha ha, I was joking. Kind of.
I really liked and agree with your description of female gamers,. I Just read in the news today about the discussion about the US athlets sports wear for the Olympics from Nike.
However, I wholeheartedly enjoy guys crying for more gender equality, who otherwise give a damn about this very subject and dismiss or even hate the desire for more equality.
I am male too and actually not particularly woke. In the opposite, I often perceive wokeness as hypocricy and selfcentered. But this kind of double standards make me LOL.
My compassion is limited as men usually have all the options while women don’t.
Funny thing is to look into the mirror from time to time and not pointing at others. I for example was like “Oops, so the Palidin is black only?” After a while though I got used to it and its hard to imagine them being white now.
And admittedly I tend to see things differently since I had a daughter.
Fun subject. This is one of the moments I wish I could express myself better in English.
I tend not to notice under the all-encompassing heavy armour. Would I probably make a character as white-ish given the choice? Probably. Does it bother me that the Pally isn’t white? Nope, absolutely zero fucks given. The Sentinel is probably the class I’ve spent most time on.
this is me too!
I mean, how one does not freeze is mildly important, too. Imagine your freeze avoidance is shitty, and you can’t dodge the sabretooth boss that is considering you a snack.
You are correct!
I’m changing my sentence to be,
Which makes sense, I guess, evolutionarily speaking it’s the only conversation worth having (other than, ‘how to survive long enough to pass on your genes’).
Well, then I’ll add another ‘agenda’ to it rather then abstaining from it, one which doesn’t care about ‘woke’ or ‘anti-woke’ or anything of that.
It’s always nice to have options.
Sometimes those options don’t make sense given the scenario/budget/other reasons.
We currently have ‘other reasons’ for that which is that 3 acts from the main storyline are missing, end-game needs to be polished, bugs fixed, balance handled.
Those are all mechanically game-related things which are mandatory for the game to function at its best.
Choosing male/female, ethnicity… whatever else… does not matter as long as those core aspects of a game aren’t properly handled.
They cost time and money. There is a limited about of developers and budget available, focusing on that - currently - would mean taking away from the budget for voicelines for the acts. It would take away from the animation-team for the acts as well, the models for MTX (which keeps the game going long-term) as well as acts and end-game improvements. The coders could handle the bugs instead of writing up the situations for the voicelines and right models to be showcased and much much more.
So while it’s always nice to have more options… it would actively hurt rather then help the game in the current state, so a ‘hard no’ at the moment.
Do they? Maybe you should re-evaluate the current state of the situation depending on the country you look at. While in some this is true in others it’s quite the other way around, and some others don’t give a single shit and just let each gender do what they want without limiting them.
We have more variety in the world on how this is handled then ever before, and neither males nor females come out well currently overall.
Which makes me think on… ‘why?’
No matter which ‘side’ you’re on that whole topic in the first place.
If it’s about sexualized characters… then heck, it’s a fantasy game, obviously people enjoy to either see ‘gritty’ characters or ‘sexy’ ones. Males with six-packs and darn overtrained, females which showcase a stunning figure and partially unrealistic proportions. It’s nice to look at, simple as that. It’s part of the ‘power fantasy’ of such a game simply. No matter if you’re a male or female and play as a male or female.
If it’s a game about a life-story of some sort then obviously the presentation would also be different, as it fits the topic the most. But that isn’t the case.
But even then… nowadays it somehow went the way that ‘looking healthy’ is not what ‘body positivity’ is anymore. If you’re positive towards your body you do what’s needed to make it function the best you can provide and not excuse yourself with shallow crap like ‘it’s fine as it is’. And there it doesn’t matter if you’ve got a genetic disease of some kind or not… it’s about ‘making the best your situation offers you’.
And that has been utterly perverted over time to a disgusting degree.
But that’s something which is beyond the gender-topic itself already and just another step.
Enforcing a literal demand on providing the gender to choose from and saying ‘it’s a necessity’ is one of the most ridiculous things in our modern society for gaming, movies or anything else. If it can provide it it’s good but if not it’s no big deal, simple as that. There’s a myriad of things more important then that by far, objectively so.
I think what he said was going a bit far (for my country at least), but there are still unreasonable disparities between the two.
Absolutely! In both directions, depending where you look at.
Some countries have actual pay discrepancies… the majority has not. Overall discrepancy in payment comes from jobs chosen versus how competitive the genders are. A male is far more likely to go into a cut-throat environment and force themselves into the highest possible position then a female. Females are more likely to go into social environments related to people rather then things, males focus more on things then people. So the variety there makes the outcome different. Obviously it’s always the outliers which are overachieving, but the outliers are more likely to lean towards a specific gender since the baseline differs slightly, makes the extremes more… well… extreme.
In some countries females have less rights. In other countries males aren’t even remotely at the same level of rights when it comes to divorce, childcare or even in how domestic violence is handled (my country includes that, males are mildly screwed over. In other countries they even get majorly screwed over and are social outcasts which are laughed at when any of it happens, gonna get one thinking as well)
So I don’t see where the argumentation comes from when we’re living in a time where the discrepancies are getting less and less and for example the Scandinavian countries have basically no walls anymore between genders… which led to more discrepancies of outcome since the opportunities were equalized.
I would downvote for relevance reasons if it meant developers would spend less time on gameplay content.
If there are graphics/animations guys just sitting around - whatever, I wouldn’t mind the gender choice. I’m just afraid of a D4 situation where ~95% (wild guess) of development resources have been mislocated.
