[Game Client] Tabbing out of the game does not stop picking up keystokes

Game Details:

  • v0.9.e (also happened in v0.9.d)
  • Online (mode doesn’t matter)
  • Server: US WEST (doubt the server matters)

What I did:

  • Log into game and enter with a character
  • Alt-tab out to a different window
  • Begin typing

What happened:

  • The game picked up the keyboard input as well as the window I tabbed out to

What I expected to happen:

  • The game should have lost focus so that keyboard input only goes to the window that I tabbed out to

What is the possible impact of this bug?

  • Tabbing out and typing certain keyboard commands could be devastating, such as:
    – Deleting items
    – Permanent character death (if in an instance and if hardcore)
    – Accidentally sending out private data (ex: passwords) to global chat

Workarounds?

  • Don’t tab out
  • Or: Tab out once, then back in. This seems to mitigate the focus issues after the first time you tab out

Is this consistently reproducible:

  • Yes, but only the first time you tab out since the client has started
  • Tested quitting the game and reproducing multiple times

This is a longstanding issue and we’ve been tracking it for a while. I’ll bump the internal issue with this thread and some additional information. Thank you for the report.
