Am I understanding Resists correctly?

The resists listed in the character sheet display my current absolute resists, and these resists are reduced by X% from enemies, whereby X = current content level up to a maximum of 75. Is that right?

Thus:

  1. Having overcapped resists is (contrary to the tutorial tooltip) in fact useful because those resists will be lowered by X, so that being overcapped by 50 (absolute: 125) will yield 75% resistance in a level 50 zone. Right?
  2. Having Y resists, if Y - X (zone level) =< 0, is useless in most non-niche situations. Increasing, say, elemental resistances from 15 to 25 is pointless in zones above level 25. Right?

Any clarifications appreciated, thanks in advance

Nope.

There are debuffs that reduce your resists. One is called “Marked for Death” which reduces resists by 25% which some monsters and bosses could put on you. There’s also Resistance Shred debuff, Armor shred, Shock, etc.

So, the way resists work is like this:

  1. Take your grand total.
  2. Reduce it by debuffs, if you have any
  3. Cap it at 75%
  4. Reduce it by Penetration (which is what Zone Level is)

Example 1: Level 75 Zone

  1. Your grand total is, say, 90%.
  2. You get a 25% debuff (70%)
  3. Cap it at 75% (still 70%)
  4. Reduce it by Zone (-5%)

Example 2: Level 75 Zone

  1. Your grand total is, say, 125%.
  2. You get a 25% debuff (100%)
  3. Cap it at 75% (now 75%)
  4. Reduce it by Zone (0%)

Thanks.
I read the Game Guide, hence my questions.

Good explanation by Zaodon.

The game is balanced around having those 75% resists reduced.
If you end up with -10% resists, you take only 10% increased damage. That’s not too bad.

If you have 0% resists in PoE, you basically take 400% times the damage the game is balanced around. Just in case you are a PoE vet.

To add onto this a bit (and I mean a bit, this was an excellent explanation), Resistance Shred also counts as a debuff and applies before the cap. So it’s not only Marked for Death, but also Shred that can affect your overcap.

Thanks much.
And yes, I am coming from PoE. So not yet entirely understanding the apparently significantly reduced impact of not having capped resists yet.

Maybe this will help you understand it better:

There’s also a few clarifications further down, but that is the basic principle of resistances in LE.

I said it wasn’t easy to get to that conclusion just by reading the game guide explanation XD
Honestly, it’s easier to get the conclusion OP showed if the person is completely unaware.

Yeah, that’s true. Maybe the guide should have some specific examples like the ones posted by Zaodon. It would make it easier to understand.

Idk, because it’s also not intuitive to think you’ll have 0% resistances if you have 75% capped resistance, like he shows in the last example.

They need to explain it in a way a new player would understand that resistances are not reducing damage taken, like what people are used to, but rather preventing extra damage to be taken.

Your calculations comparison on the other thread is really helpful for people coming from PoE.

I don’t think I understand you correctly. According to the guide and the way I understand resistances is “Resistances apply whenever you take damage, reducing how much damage you take.” So they do reduce damage taken, not a guard against extra damage. If you are going to take damage from fire but you have 10% fire resistance, then you only take 90% of the fire damage.

From the guide “If you have 10% physical resistance, you will take 10% less physical damage.”

It does go on to explain things that can reduce you resistances but I do agree that it should be a little more detailed.

Right. But with the way LE is balanced. You’re expected to have capped resists and in lv75 areas the enemies penetrate 75% of your resistances. So if you’re not capped you’re taking extra damage.

So, yes, technically you’re still reducing damage, but it’s effectively just preventing you from taking extra damage. (having 70% resists in 75+ areas effectively means you take 105% damage vs 100% damage at 75% resists.)

Exactly. That’s because they have a natural resistance penetration built in per level up to 75.
